How to keep Roses alive longer

Hi.  I live in So. CA, if that matters.  I have a few rose bushes in the front yard that I planted almost a year ago.  They bloom pretty roses, but it seems like they die so quickly, maybe within a week?  Is that typical?  If not, any recs on how to keep them alive longer?

Thank you!!

Re: How to keep Roses alive longer

  • Most flowers do only survive for a couple days; many people who didn't grow up around gardening don't understand this.  In addition to individual blooms only lasting a few days, many plants are not remontant (repeat bloomers).  You have to specifically buy varieties of roses that rebloom because not all do; typically, old-fashioned roses or generic ones just bloom for a week or two and then they're done for the year.  Yep, that makes them pretty worthless in a garden unless they have truly fantastic blooms or fragrance.

If you want to replace your current plants, try Flower Carpet roses.  It was 100 degrees here for 3 months AND we're in a drought and there've been a dozen blooms on each shrub all summer long.  Here because our weather's so mild, I expect them to bloom 10 months of the year.

  • It's true that the blooms are pretty short lived.  I have a hybrid-tea rose in my garden right now (in upstate NY) which will re-bloom if I prune just as the roses are about to turn.  The first bloom this year yielded about 10 roses, but the second one turned out 18!

  • I have some rose bushes and while the blooms only last a week, I cut the dead roses off at an angle to the first set of leaves that has 5 leaves then the buds will grow and bloom again.  I kept this up all summer and I still have blooms coming in.

     Good Luck!
