Help!

I have so many clothes that are stained by the oil that is not being rinsed out in the wash!

I currently use 7th generation, but that is not recommended for cloth diapers nor is it doing the job. Had to buy Tide as a temporary fix for the cds.  I have already checked with the Bump, but the focus seems to be on stink (which the diapers do not have) and not on stain removal.  I am hoping that you can offer suggestions for green laundry detergent that REALLY works!

I do not have an HE washer, my family is allergic to almost all dyes, frangrances, etc which luckily most eco-friendly detergent is free from and I prefer a powder.  I do not have time to pretreat in any form so it needs to work with just a scoop, cold water and the washer doing all the work. I have tried Shanklee (love it, but not rec. for cds).  Oxiclean was a bust for helping remove stains.

I am frustrated and my family's clothes are getting disgracefully spotted.  Please offer suggestions.  I will try to compare the suggestions here to what is highly recommended for cds.  Thanks in advance.

This made me laugh.  Without fail, whenever I cook with oil, it is mysteriously attracted to my clothes.  The harder I try to avoid it, the more it happens.

I can tell you that Biokleen powder and liquid detergents and Earth Friendly Products ECOS liquid detergent do NOT get out oil.  They've been great on all other dirt, grime and odors, though.

  • Spray with Zout (seriously it take 2 seconds).  Or soak in oxyclean overnight in hot water.  Try washign on warm instead.

I know you said you want to just dump it in the washer and go, but that is a pipe dream IMO.

Personally I find that I can use a very tiny amount of regular Tide (like 1 Tablespoon) and get good results.  I know it is not the most eco-friendly but I use so little, and I don't have to end up rewashing things or throwing stained things away as often.  I use it for CD's too.

I have the best luck for CD's with Sportwash aka Sensiclean.  But it is expensive unless you order multiple gallons at once, and who wants to do that.

  • If its oil from when you are cooking, put some dish soap on it right away. The dish soap is supposed to cut thru grease, so it works at getting that statin out of the clothes. If you do it right away you won't forget. Is it worse to walk around with a grease spot or a soap spot?
  • I have never used this product but they are selling dropps on Baby Steals today. Try looking at this...

Its the special today and probably worth a try if you are having issues. I am not sure how "green" it is other than the packaging, but might be worth it.

  • Yah, it's not really from cooking and it's not just on me.  It's usually my boys' clothes (shirt and pant fronts mostly) usually from eating or playing with something.  I get it on me when I'm playing with them or picking them up.

I never know if a mess is going to do this until I have washed and dried the clothes and see the stain afterwards which is why I said pretreat is out unless I wanted to attempt to pretreat every item that goes into my washer which would take about 30 mins extra per load times 4 loads a day while my toddler plays unsupervised on the main level (laundry is in root cellar that is sooo not kid proofed nor could it be).  That is why pretreating is out.

Any other suggestions on detergents that really work cleaning all the stuff out of clothes?
