Poll: What do you call your MIL?

To her face anyway Wink

j/k- I love my inlaws

Lately MIL has started referring to herself and signing cards to me as "Mom C" (her first initial). I don't care really but it makes me feel weird. I had a great Mom and can't use that name for anyone else.

When I speak to MIL I call her by her first name. I have friends who call their IL's Mom and Dad. What do you do?

Re: Poll: What do you call your MIL?

  • I call her Diana.  She refers to herself as "Mom" but I feel the same way that you do.

  • Her first name.  I think it would freak both of us out if I referred to her as Mom (well, Mum.  She's English!)
  • This is a bone of contention in my family. My parents want DH to call them Mom and Dad, but DH's parents want to be called by their first names. We assume it will be solved once we have kids as we will refer to them an Nana, etc.

  • I call her "Carol," her first name.  My DH also refers to my mom by her first name.

I just think it would be weird to call her mom!

  • I call MIL by her first name.  I call FIL 'sir' - lol!

  • First names...I could never use mom or dad with them!
  • I refer to my MIL by her first-name.  I don't agree with calling her 'Mom,' just doesn't seem right.
  • I call her Jean. She really wanted me to call her mom. I just can't and I had a conversation with her about it and told her I was uncomfortable with it. I think DH would want me to also, especially because she wants it so badly, but I am not sure if my mom were alive that he would call her mom. Wow sorry for the novel.

  • DH calls his mom Schma so I do too.  I don't think I could call anyone other than my own mother mom.

  • First names or Grandma or Grandpa.  DH's step-mom signs cards "Mama C" which is kind of funny since DH and siblings have always called her by her first name.

  • I call her Mom.  She is 87 years old and its just easier that way.  She is great!
  • I now call my inlaws grandma virginia and grandpa martin but before Enzo was born I called them by their first names ...

I feel how you do, labbie, especially with my mom gone...

    Same here!

  • I call them by their first names - I already have a mom/dad

When we got engaged my dad said to DH you call us by our first names, you already have a mom and dad so that settled that as well.

so everyone is on a first name basis in our family.

  • I call her Karin. I don't think I could ever call her Mom...she is so far from my mom it's like an impossible thought. Honestly though in person....I don't refer to her by name all the time...you know? I don't really refer to people's first names when I'm with them unless I'm asking them to come over or help from a different room.

  • I call her by her first name, but she refers to herself as "Mom Mary" when she talks to me.

  • I usually call them by their first names, but we have this joke and when we email or write things, I usually call them Mom2 and Dad2 or MomTwo and DadTwo.  They are really funny about it.  They have 3 sons (including DH) and so sometimes I sign emails "Kid4."  But when we are talking at family things, I usually just refer to them by their first names.
  • Now that I have Quinn it is easy, I call her Mimi.  Before Quinn, I called her Mrs. K jokingly because she would always joke and call me Mrs. K.
