Anyone growing snap peas?

Hoping4Septimus, Kastle? Anyone else?

I planted a dwarf snap pea variety and the seedlings are off to a good start. I'm using a tomato cage for them to climb. What are you using for them? I saw the beginnings of vines yesterday, but I think I should add some twine to the cage to give them extra climbing help.

Any tips for growing them?

Re: Anyone growing snap peas?

  • I grew dwarf snap peas in the spring and they completely outgrew their support.  I would say that your tomato cage might not be tall enough. Maybe try a bamboo stick teepee.... Also, I think that they really liked the fish emulsion fertilizer that I used.
  • i bought some cute trellises last spring but they weren't nearly tall enough so I went out and bought 6' stakes and netting for my fall crop... well the stakes don't stand up very well in my raised garden because the soil is too loose, so hopefully I'll figure out something for next spring, including possibly moving where I plant them to against my garage wall and tacking the netting directly to the brick.
  • My late spring planting (I was slow this year) I used a tomato cage and they outgrew it - luckily it was near the tomatoes and they just vined through.  With green beans I've had luck doing two large stakes (6 feet tall), string twine between them and then tying twin so it hangs down over my plants.  The beans gobbled it up so to speak.  I am sure it would work for sugar snaps as well.
