Being Green at the Las Vegas Hilton pays off!

We live in Phoenix and a lot of our "staycations" are taken at Vegas.  My boyfriend is the member of a player's club at the Hilton Las Vegas so they send him comped rooms and meals monthly so we go up there every couple of months to get away.  Well they have a green initiative now where they encourage you to turn down housekeeping for the day.  In exchange they give you a $10 off coupon you can use anywhere at the hotel.  I never get housekeeping when I stay at a hotel (both for eco and privacy purposes) so this is a great little perk!  We use the coupons to buy breakfast each morning.

However I wish they had a better method for distributing the coupons.  They come on recycled paper, which is great but it still means a piece of paper is printed on and used for each person who does this.  But hey, at least they're trying!

  • How cool!  I'd love to see more hotels start that.  I usually turn down housekeeping too b/c it irritates the crap out of me when they put up those signs saying, "Help save the environment and hang up your towel so we know not to replace it."  I always hang up my towel, and 9 times out of 10 I come back to find my towels replaced anyway.

  • Oh that's a smart incentive! I think a lot of people don't even think about skipping housekeeping services. I do, for privacy and green reasons as well. I really like when hotels give you options like you can just ask for extra towels, and not the full service.

  • That's a neat service!  I also turn down housekeeping for green and privacy reasons.  I just put the "Do Not Disturb" sign on my door, so they don't even come in and secretly change out the towels.

When I was in Mexico they kept calling my room and asking why I kept my "Do Not Disturb" sign on.  I told them I didn't want housekeeping service during my stay.  They were SO confused!  They didn't understand why (I told them I just didn't need it, I had plenty of towels and make the bed myself).  They were still confused and kept knocking on my door trying to give me more towels.  I was ONE person staying in a room with EIGHT towels for five days!  I appreciated the attention to their guests, but it was a bit annoying.

  • Sweet! I find daily housekeeping unnecessary too...

Hopefully more hotels start doing this

(I doubt the room keepers get paid $10 per room, tooConfused)

  • The Wyndham (sp?) in Cincinnati does this exact thing too.  You get 10 for the restaurant in the lobby.
