how long after move for housewarming party?

Just curious if there is a time frame that is "acceptable" for a housewarming. Obviously at the beginning you're busy getting settled but what is the longest you would be comfortable waiting? tia.

Re: how long after move for housewarming party?

  • IMO, up to 6 months is the norm, 6-12 months gets a little odd, and anything over 1 year screams AW.

  • I think it depends on the situation.

I agree the "norm" is 6 months or less, maaaaybe if you moved at a busy time and/or had other big life changes (lost/changed jobs, married, baby) you could push it to a year.

The exception, I think, is if you buy a significant fixer-upper -- meaning it takes you over a year to complete the remodels. If you're working on it consistently and you want to have everyone over when it's complete (or mostly complete) then I think you have more time. Then again, that's probably less of a "housewarming" and more of a "reveal"...

  • Really, I would say whenever you're all settled in.  Obviously you don't want to host a party when stuff is still in boxes, but I'd try to make it as close to when you're done moving as possible.
  • After a few months I would call it an "open house" as opposed to a housewarming. After 6 months to 1 year I would just throw a generic bbq.

  •  we probably wont be having a housewarming party. we finished renovations and moved in in August, threw 2 other parties that month, then in September hosted 2 wedding craft/football watching parties, then October: the wedding (at our home), next we host a ufc party, then halloween, November: a thanksgiving dinner, December: christmas party (or 2), and then January, my baby shower, February: Superbowl and Daytona 500 (right around here our baby will be born) so pretty much everyone weve ever known will have seen our new home at least 3 times before we get a chance to do a housewarming, even though we arent completely settled in yet.

the only reason to throw one would be for gifts really and we were gifted generously for our wedding, and will probably be for the baby too.
