CSA w/ non-regional farms?

I'm looking at CSA's in our area and came across one that isn't actually one farm, it's numerous farms. Ok, great, I like variety.

But, according to their site, some items may come from farms outside the southeast US. While they guarantee that the farms are organic producers, isn't part of the point to support and eat from community sources, as in your own community? Is this common?

Re: CSA w/ non-regional farms?

  • I guess it depends on what it is. There's a co-op I use sometimes (not a CSA) that buys primarily from local farmers but they also carry organic and fair trade items which are obviously not from here (like coffee and cocoa).
  • Some CSAs, like the one you found, decide to run their operations like little grocery stores.  They'll carry local produce when it's in season, but since they see a demand for non-local produce also (I'm a committed locavore but I buy citrus and coffee) they decided to fill that demand.  It's your call if you're choosing a CSA to support your local community, or to get high-quality mostly local produce delivered to your door.
