What's your motivation

Since we've gotten married and moved, I've gained some weight, more than I would like. I know I need to get my butt going to the gym but I feel like I have no motivation.

Tell me what motivates you to get to the gym, get working out or eat right.

Re: What's your motivation

  • Sadly Im with you on the lack of motivation. Hopefully someone has something good that will help the both of us.

  • I am with you! After the wedding, I gained some weight and I'm not happy about it. Right now, my motivation is my pants. I have 5 pairs of cords from J Crew that I love wearing in the winter. I can get them on, but they are very uncomfortable. I don't have the money for new pants right now so I'm working hard to get comfy in my pants again!
  • i'm in the same no-motivation boat as everyone. i know i should be going to the gym... even H goes with out me. i just feel like i have so much going on right now i can't stand the thought of having to get up early to go. excuses, excuses...

  • I guess I can't put into words what my motivation is. I just do it, but do get lazy every now and then. I guess for me, it becomes more of a routine and it makes me feel better, have more energy and sleep better. Right now, it is to get H to go with me he is always so tired when he comes home from work. I guess I also dream of a great body, which hasn't happened yet, but I know it is good for the rest of my body.

After being out of town and sick, yesterday was the first day I have went in almost 2 wks. When I got on the scale the other day, I had gained a few pounds but had hardly eaten anything....go figure. I am definitely feeling what its like to not go for 2 wks, but getting ready to head to the gym now before I have to go to work again tonight.

  • I find I do best when I have a specific goal in mind.  And a fitness goal usually works better for me than a weight/body size goal, but that could be just me.  I get frustrated if I start working towards something like my size because the changes are slower than I can take.

Right now, I've been focusing on getting through Saturday's marathon without dying (wish me luck!).  Even if I'm working on something much smaller, like an upcoming 5k or local bike ride, my competitive nature won't let me be the slowest, most out of shape person there.  So I keep going during my training.  I also enjoy competing with myself (see if I can go 5 more minutes than last time kind of thing).

I also have a couple group exercise classes that I go to every week.  It helps keep me accountable when people there ask "where were you last Wednesday" and I don't want to tell them I was just a lazy arse and ate pizza instead of coming.

My motivation to eat better comes from exercising.  When I work hard, I really don't feel like having junk food.  Seriously.  I still indulge, but it's way less.  So I try to exercise before dinner.  I pack my gym bag and stop on the way home.  It's way easier than going home and trying to get myself to leave again.  On the days I don't feel like it, I just tell myself to go and give it 5 minutes and then I can leave if I'm still not into it.  99% of the time, I stay past 5 minutes.

Hang in there girls!  We all go through funks.

  • I am having a hard time due to the same thing. One thing that helps me is wearing pants that are really uncomfortble makes me want to eat better so that I can fit into them like they used to or so I can button them lol.

Another motivation is watching the biggest loser. I get inspired and figure if they can do it then so can I. Staying motivated is the hardest part.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions/advice. We may need to start a Weekly Work Out check in, that may help me be slightly more accountable.

I called a friend at home who, I swear, is at the gym every day after work and looks incredible her motivation and I love what she said. She told me that since the gym is on her way to and from work that she rents a locker at the gym. Every morning she drops off her gym back and puts her house keys inside the gym bag so that she HAS to go to the gym to get them. She said once she is there that it's impossible to just get the keys and walk out.

  • I love that idea! What a clever way to force yourself do something.I also like the idea of a weekly check up.

I guess I need to start thinking about setting a new record each time I go instead of focusing on the body image.

Unfortunately, that wouldn't work for me bc I work out at our apt gym which has treadmills, elipticals and a total body machine. H and I have also started lifting some free weights at home.

  • I need some kind of motivation.  I feel fat and bloated all the time.  And all my pants are tight.  I need to get moving more... it would probably help with the exhaustion, too.

  • I'm on the same boat I lost a lot of my motivation right after the wedding and finally went back a month ago and stopped going two weeks ago. H and I are planning to start up again this weekend. It's really hard to get motivated but when I'm done working out I feel great! My plan is to frame a picture of what I want to look like and inspirational quotes around the house, for those times I get lazy.
