House hunting: Southie near Andrew Sq. or Thomas Pk.?

Hi, everyone.

I don't post here much, but when I do, I always get great info!  DH and I are casually looking at houses/condos (thinking of buying next year), and we have recently started looking at Southie (currently live in the South End).  We would really like to be within walking distance of one of the T stops (Broadway or Andrew) so we don't have to bus it to work every day.

Our broker seems to think that the neighborhood around the Andrew Square red line stop (within a 10-15 minute walk) is not great and has discouraged us from looking there.  DH and I are going to do some exploring and spend more time down there, but I would love to hear opinions from anyone who lives there or frequents the area, including the Thomas Park area, which looks like a 15 minute walk from Andrew.  My biggest concern is safety, since I often come home from work after dark, and at least a few times a week, I walk our pups by myself in the evening.

Thanks for any thoughts or advice!

  • I live in Southie and the area near the T-stops is not as nice as the eastside, where you would need to take the bus.  I actually like the bus a lot better than the T.  Not sure where you work, but the #9 goes to Copley and the #7 to the financial district.  The trip is very quick, and there are bus stops all over Southie.  The eastside is also nice because it is a quick walk to Castle Island.  Thomas Park is nice, but I don't know if I would want to walk to Andrew Square from there.  There is a project you would need to walk by.  There are also bus stops a short walk from Thomas Park though.    Good luck in your search!  I love living in Southie.

I haven't posted before, but I thought I would respond to help.  I got married in June of '09.

Thanks so much!  Maybe my dislike of buses is misplaced.  I hated them when I lived in NYC (the subway was soooo much better), but it sounds like they are better Boston.  I work in the Financial District, so I will check out the #7.  Glad to hear you like living in Southie - I love some of the restaurants down there, and I am sick of paying South End prices!

  • My SILS lived in Andrew Square for 3 years,  they enjoyed it there. Being near the T was great, and there was a great restaurant called 224 that you could walk to from their apartment. They never felt unsafe there, but the pp is right you can't walk to the main drags of southie from there.

I have friends that live on 0 street, and also Columbia road and they enjoy it there as well. There is more of a neighborhood "feel" over there.
