"Secret Santa/Snowman/Snowflake" ideas

Has anyone ever hosted a "secret santa" with coworkers or friends (also known by other politically correct terms such as Secret Snowman or Secret Snowflake")?

I am part of the "sunshine committee" at work, which is a two year gig, and last year we began a new tradition by adding this game to our holiday festivities.  Those who wanted to participate signed up, and I wrote all the names on slips of paper and put them in a bucket to be drawn.  Each person drew a name and that was their gift recipient.  We kept the dollar ammount small- $10- and set a specific date that gifts should be exchanged.  We asked that each person write a brief clue as to who they were and secretly gave the gift to the recipient (snuck it into their mailbox, a desk drawer, etc...).  It was fun, but I feel like there was no "big reveal" of the gift giver- you basically just had to guess all day long, which was fun because it kept people talking and wondering all day until you figured it out.

However, I'm wondering if there's another/better way to do it?  My husband's school does this too, and they do it differently- they're asked to spend $25 and buy 5 small gifts, where the first four are secret (one each day) and then they host a breakfast Friday morning and you give the last gift in person so the receiver finally knows who their secret giver was.

Thoughts or suggestions? Hmm, I just realized that I did not live up to my plan of "short and sweet"... sorry! :)

This is basically what my school does. I like it. It kind of stretches out the fun and guessing.

What we do, though, it 2 smaller gifts of $5 each, and then the last gift is ~$15. So the last gift is the "big" one, comparatively speaking. We also encourage homemade and gag gifts for the smaller ones. Also, we encourage creative gift delivery. For example, instead of leaving it on their desk before they get to work, you would leave the gift inside their empty coffee mug in the lunchroom, or have a student hand deliver it. Last year, my secret santa sent me on a scavenger hunt for one of my gifts, it was so fun!

  • I was wondering what to do with my office this year and you just gave me some awesome ideas, thanks.  we just give each other small gifts but this sounds like so much more fun.
