jeans

One of my SIL's friends recently stated that boot cut jeans are the new "mom jeans." I pretty much wear only boot cut jeans. Am I horribly behind the times? Are all my jeans mom jeans? I haven't even tried on skinny jeans because I'm top heavy and am fairly certain they'll make me look like a tomato on a pair of toothpicks.

Re: jeans

  • I think your SIL's friend is on crack.  I'm no fashionista, but I don't see how boot cut jeans = mom jeans
  • If you want me in a pair of skinny jeans, you'll have to kill me first.

    image
  • I'd wear mom jeans if they flattered my body. I'd much rather be out of style and in flattering clothes than the reverse.

  • Wha? your friend is crazy. Bootcut jeans are awesome, and they always will be.

Unless your bootcut jeans have a 12 inch zipper and a major case of front butt, you're golden, man.

  • I don't wear skinny jeans, but I don't wear bootcut either.

And I am pretty sure this same conversation happened 20 years ago about high waisted jeans too.

But high-waisted jeans are mom jeans! Boot cut jeans are mom jeans! FREAK OUT! LOUD NOISES!

Anyway. I'm not going to buy skinny jeans just because my SIL's friend thinks it's the thing to do. I just hadn't heard that before, but I also don't have my finger on the pulse of fashion, or whatever. Also, aside from the tomato/toothpick issue, there's also the long feet issue, and I think skinny jeans will just accentuate my clown feet.

  • I have tried to get on the skinny jeans train but I just feel like they aren't flattering on anyone.  I've tried them, but just can't bring myself to purchase.  My only lament about boot cut or other non skinny jeans is that you can't tuck them into high boots.

  • I still can't get over the fact that all we heard for YEARS is that tapered jeans make one look top heavy... That bootcut jeans were God's gift...

    Skinny jeans are a fad.
And they give you yeast infections.

Save your vagina. Wear bootcut jeans.

  • This came up on ML last week and it was determined that they are not mom jeans.

It's all about flattering fits and cuts. Skinny jeans are not that on many people.

  • I have skinny jeans. i also have skinny maternity jeans. They should not be worn without a flowy shirt.
  • No, bootcut are fine. Mom jeans are more about wash and crotch proportion. I bought a pair of straight leg jeans to wear with boots. I've yet to wear them but they are in my possession.

  • Is boot cut the same as straight leg?

Bootcut has a slight flare to it, AFAIK.

  • As far as I know.

  • Yep, they have a very slight flare to fit over boots, hence the name.

  • Your SIL's friend is the one behind the times.   Skinny jeans are on their way out, bootcut and flare will be the trendy ones again.

  • Didn't someone on ML comment about this in the Jennifer Garner/Ben Affleck post?  They said that she's wearing 'mom jeans'.  I'm sorry, but bootcut Citizens of Humanity are not 'mom jeans'.

  • I wear both skinny and bootcut. I am simultaneously wearing unflattering AND out of style clothing.

Me too. I just feel strange in straight leg jeans. I bought a pair at Old Navy this summer just to have a pair of cheap jeans that fit after giving birth. They now just sit in the drawer. I can't bring myself to wear them.

Between this and the "It couldn't have been rape, she was wearing skinny jeans" defense, I think there are too many definitions of skinny jeans.

I am wearing some today, and they fit the same as pretty much any other pair of jeans until you get to the knee and below.  My crotch has plenty of room to breathe.

  • I don't really understand.  As someone else said, haven't we been told for years that tapered legs make our asses and hip look bigger?
    image
  • I'm personally not a fan of how skinny jeans look on people except when they're tucked into a cute pair of boots.  I wore skintight jeans long after baggy jeans came into fashion (in my teens), and once I switched I haven't ever wanted to put on pants that hug me tight from top to bottom.  All of my pants are tight because I'm a fat wildabeast anyway.  Bootcut at least lets my calves breathe.

  • Skinny jeans don't have to be tight though. To me, it's more a cut than a tightness factor.

  • My new fave jeans are Express Barely Boot. They fit like a skinny, but have a little bit of a flare at the bottom so one can wear flats without having clown feet.

I think the rise of a jean does more to determine mom jean status than the leg.

I don't think people mean that bootcuts are mom jeans, but that they are for old fogeys who are out of style.

Exactly.  They are tighter around the calves and ankle, but not all of them are tight.

Fallin, I honestly didn't think I would ever wear them, but I kept hearing how flattering this one certain brand was, even on bigger women.  So I tried them on and I like the way they look.  I was surprised but I love them now.

  • What brand is that?  I'm thinking about getting a pair, only to be worn tucked in to tall boots.  Other jeans have too much material at the bottom to fit in to boots.  However, I would not wear them otherwise.  I do not enjoy looking like an ice cream cone (sugar, not cake).

  • I agree that the right cut of "skinny" jeans can look good on a lot of people. There is a difference between a lot of the skinny or straight jeans of today and the high rise, relaxed up top, tapered on the bottom universally unflattering monstrosities of the past.

Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of uglyazz jeans out there right now too. I just think with the right cut and the right tops, they can look good on a wide variety of body types. I broke down and bought a really stretchy, comfy pair this summer. I only wear them with long tops because I would rather camoflauge my upper thighs and rear, but paired with some heels or boots, they make my legs look great, and allow me to wear bigger, comfortable tops without looking heavier or sloppy.

  • Lindsay, they're Gap Always Skinny dark wash.  Super comfy too.

I have a pair of the Gap Forever Skinny in a medium wash and they're maybe a little more flattering, but a little less comfy.
