Heart Healthy Entertaining

Hi guys!  You always have such great ideas so I thought I would see if anyone can help with this.  My brother-in-law just had a heart attack a few weeks ago and he's coming from FL to PA to stay with us for a week.  I know to avoid salt and fat which probably means as much home cooking as possible.  Anyone know of any great heart healthy living blogs?  TIA!

Re: Heart Healthy Entertaining

  • no blogs I know of. but stick with things that are low carb.  Things like Olive oil, salmon are good for the heart, green leafy veggies..

A lot of people with heart problems are often over weight (not sure if this is your BIL's issue?) but just stick with low fat, low carb meals.

www.skinnytaste.com has some good healthy options.

  • I think you should talk to your BIL about this.  Or check out the American Heart Assoc. website.  I'm sure they have info.
  • My parents have a friend with heart problems and he typically eats no red meat... just chicken, fish, turkey, etc.  I would focus on lean meats, lots of veggies, and fiber rich starches like brown rice, quinoa, and cous cous.

Take a look at the Health and Fitness Nest board.... the girls on there have some great blogs with healthy recipes.  Quite a few even post the nutrition facts as well.

  • Check out the american heart association website. They have all heart-healthy products on there.
  • I try a lot of recipes from www.cookinglight.com.  They have all kinds of recipes to choose from and they list all of the calories, fat, sodium, etc...
  • Thanks girls. BIL is not overweight but he was a smoker - trying to quit.  The websites look great & I was thinking of giving salmon a try even though I always hate fish I thought I'd try an almond crusted salmon and a blackened (with evoo instead of butter) salmon and see if it'll make it more tolerable.  Thanks again!
