My husband and I are talking about moving to CT. We love the area. I am a teacher and currently live in a completely saturated area for teachers (for every 1 job there are 500+ applicants) so it is next to impossible to find a job here. I taught 1st grade last year as a long term sub until the end of the year and this year I'm a building substitute. We are pretty settled in PA, but we would like a change and we want to go to an area that I would be able to find a teaching job. When I go onto sites like usreap.net, I see positions open in CT. What is the job availability in CT? Would I be able to come in as someone from an outside state and get a teaching position?

Re: Any teachers on here?
Hi! I have been teaching in CT for 8 years at the secondary level. You would definitely have to become certified in CT but I believe some schools will hire you while you work on your certification especially if you are already certified in another state.
Your best bet would be to check 'cea.org' and then click on jobs at the top or also ctreap.net like you mentioned. I'm pretty sure there are less jobs available at the elementary level right now but it doesn't hurt to check. Hope this helps!
Hi there! I am kind of in the same boat as you. My DH and I want to move up to CT next summer (we're both teachers and are waiting until the end of the school year) to be closer to family. We're terrified that we're not going to be able to get jobs, which would result in not being able to move
We both have taught in MD for 5 years, and I think that we also meet the qualifications for CT. Wish us luck...we're so excited to start the next chapter of our lives in CT
I know the job market here in CT is also saturated, especially with elementary level teachers. Not to get you discouraged though, but elementary is certainly not a shortage area here!
I am a school psychologist and finally got my first job after being a long term sub in two different districts. My school is a 3-8 building and our principal was saying that there were over 200 applicants for a 5th grade position we posted. I know we'll be having a long term sub opening for 6th grade coming up eventually.
Good luck!

All I have to say is it will be a long winding road. I applied for my CT teaching certificate in Feb. and it did not go through until the end of Sept. I called every week but it was always something else. I have two masters degrees and was teacher of year last year at my school in SC. However, that does not seem to matter here.
I have been subbing locally in the Southern CT where the sub rate is extremely low 75.00 compared to the 125.00 paid in SC. I basically could work in a dept store for more money.
I was finally offered a part-time job, but will have to keep subbing to pay for the living cost here. If you have an option try to find a less expensive state to move to.
Best of luck.

I just wrote something similar to another similar question.
I grew up in southwestern CT and then moved to California to do Teach for America...moved back to CT June 2009 and was a TA and a long-term sub...this year I got hired in New Haven, after I used the Fairfield Teachers' Agency, a recruiting-type firm for teachers. There were 5,000+ applications coming in for some jobs I applied for in the district I was LT subbing in....so I am very grateful for Fairfield Teacher's Agency!
