Ziplock BPA free

I was at the store yesterday looking to replace our current food storage containers with new BPA free containers.  Rubbermaid has a few BPA free choices and ofcourse glass Pyrex is BPA free.  I happen to look at the Ziploc containers which I was sure would not be BPA free but on their packaging it says BPA free.  Does anyone know if this is true or have they been able to get by certain rules to be able to package them as BPA free?

Re: Ziplock BPA free

  • Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question, but if you are concerned about Ziploc lying on their packaging, how do you know that Rubbermaid is telling the truth?

Anyways, the FDA regulates BPA content in food containers (per this PDF on the Federation of American Scientists website).  I tried to find some more information about the thresholds and testing involved, but mostly I'm getting random blog results.  Maybe someone else has some more info?

  • not sure about the ziplock bags - they are likely safe unless you are heating them up, though

you should be more worried about canned food - the BPA levels in the linings of cans (other than beans from Eden) leaches toxic amounts into food - tell your senators to vote for the BPA amendment bill from Senator Feinstein :)

  • If they say they are BPA free, they should be. I believe BPA is generally found in hard plastics and shouldn't be in those containers, which are pretty soft.
