*UPDATE!* My niece just was diagnosed with ITP

I don't know if I should be freaking out or what, but my 2 year old (almost 3) niece, Cera (pronounced Sarah....yeah, don't ask), has been diagnosed with Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). I'm 800 miles away and feel like I can't do anything. She means everything to me. Luckily, she's getting treatments and it should just go away. When my father called telling me about low blood count, I thought he was going to say cancer, so I did get somewhat better news. They said that Cera had been bruising over the weekend over the littlest things. A few websites mention that kids usually can get over it on their own, but my sister and BIL opted for the treatment. I'm glad they did because it makes me feel much better.

Has anyone known anybody with ITP or went through it themselves? I am just worried sick! TIA for any advice.

*She's fine! The treatment worked and she went home not too long ago. Just in time for her 3rd birthday party on Sat (her birthday is actually on Nov. 2nd). I wish I could be there with her!

Re: *UPDATE!* My niece just was diagnosed with ITP

  • T&P for a speedy recovery!
  • i had a different form of purpura when i was 5 (henoch schonlein purpura), i'm assuming they're similar.  mine was basically an autoimmune disorder that was caused by my body reacting  to antibodies released from fighting a virus.  my legs were covered in bruises and my joints got extremely swollen.  the first bout lasted about a month, then went away, and then for the next 2 years i would have flare ups every time i had a virus, although each bout was less severe than the one before.  i haven't had it since, and i was fortunate not to have any lasting damage.  chances are, if she has a mild case, she'll completely recover on her own.  lots of t&ps to her and your family!

  • Yep, I have it. ?My dad also has it. ?You can live, a long, happy life with it, and there are plenty of treatments available. ?There are also varying degrees of severity. ?I hope that the treatments work well for her and that she feels better soon.

If you don't mind me asking, have any idea what her platelet level was??

    ?

  • I've had two relatives with it ... my Dad and my Aunt.  If you haven't been there yet, check out the forums on the www.pdsa.org site.  They have forums specifically that deal with childhood ITP.
  • Thank you, girls!!! I'm sorry that I didn't get back to any of you quickly, I went to bed early last night because I gave myself a migraine (from being upset). I'll look at the website and find out what her platelets level were/was (I can't think about correct grammar usage ATM) when I speak with my sister. I had a horrible dream last night because of this. I think once I speak to my sister, I'll feel more at ease.

Thanks again for the T&P's and the information!!

My sister said that the doctor told her 28. I'm not sure if that meant 2800 or what.

GOOD NEWS!! The treatment worked, her platelet level doubled and was rising. They left the hospital a little while ago. Yay! Thank you for the T&P's!! I have never heard of ITP before this happened and I'm glad she's going to okay! Big Smile

  • My brother has ITP. He couldn't play certain sports, he had to have his wisdom teeth removed in the hospital (just in case) and when he's injured he has to take extra precautions but other than that he's had a normal life. He's 27 now and his platelet level has been normal for the last three checkups. I'm glad her treatment is working!
