Help!

I have multiple ideas for stories floating around in my head.  I just can't decide which one I want to use.  How do you decide which idea to use when there's more than one?

Re: Help!

  • I usually just go with my gut and grab whichever one I have the strongest pull toward. If you're planning on doing revisions past NaNo, you will probably be with the story for a LONG time, so you need to love it.

If you honestly feel like you love both equally, then you need to do a little plotting. It doesn't have to be a major outline, but do a rough sketch. Once you get the stuff down on paper, you might realize that one idea doesn't have as big of a climax as you thought, or one of them kind of falls apart. Or you may find that you're able to kind of combine your ideas.

  • I agree with Heather. GO with your gut, and which one you feel the most drawn to.  If that doesn't work, try working through each of them to see where you will be able to go with them, and that might really help you narrow it down.

I had a few ideas floating around for a while too, and just finally decided this week which one I would go with.  I decided because it kept coming back to me, more than the others.  Also because I think it'll be a little easier to write than some of my other ideas, and because I think it'll be good practice/a good stepping stone to some other ideas that I have had bumping around in my head for a long time.

    Good luck!

  • I completely agree with the 2 PPs.  Good luck with your choice!

I'm struggling with that this year. Prior to this year I only had 1 idea. This year I have 5 or 6... I think in the end I'll just choose which one I think I can get to 50K words without losing steam...

  • I had a few I was toying with ... and then THE ONE pushed its way into my brain and won't let go.
