Is it lame to give money as a baby shower gift?

So I made my friend that sock monkey blanket and hat for her baby shower that I posted a while back. The shower is this weekend and I'm flying to Chicago for the event. Because I'm lame I didn't plan ahead I'm basically out of time to buy anything else from her registries (even a gift card, as I can't get to the stores she's registered at before I get on the plane tomorrow).

So would it be poor form to just give her money in a card, along with the blanket/hat set I made?  It would be acceptable in my culture, but I haven't been to many baby showers so I don't know what's OK.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • That is fine.

Or you could have your DH swing by the grocery store and get an AmEx gift card if that makes you feel more comfortable.

  • I don't think that's lame at all.  Especially since it comes with a hand-made gift!  You are certainly not going to look lazy or flaky.

If you have time and you really prefer not to give her cash or a check, you could check out your local grocery store and see if they sell gift cards there for any of the stores where she is registered.  I am always surprised to see how many different gift cards they carry.

  • That's not lame!

I had multiple people give me cash at our baby shower. It was actually super helpful, because we used it to buy things like diapers (which are much cheaper at WalMart sometimes or BJs than Babys R Us, where most people register).

I know some people consider cash and gift cards really impersonal, but since you're including a hand made gift, that's nothing something you would have to worry about!

  • Awesome, thanks, ladies!  I'm going to go with the cash route.  I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some taboo against this that I wasn't aware of.  I've learned about more random etiquette no-no's than I'd ever thought possible since my days on the Knot/Nest.

  • For sure not lame.  I loved the sock monkey blanket and hat.
