What's more earth friendly?

Rinsing the paint roller after painting or throwing it away?  Using low VOC paint, if that makes a difference.

Thanks!

Re: What's more earth friendly?

  • hmmm... good question - I think that they do make biodegradable rollers (not really helpful now, but for the future)
  • Well, either way you go the paint is going to get into the earth someway (whether through water or through being thrown in the landfill).  At least if you clean it and reuse it you're saving the roller from being in a landfill.  So I'd rinse and reuse!
  • Rinse and reuse for sure.
  • I would also think rinse and reuse.

  • In Stockholm, the water company recommends wringing out the rollers as much as you can with newspaper (or paper towels, I suppose) and throwing that away, then washing the roller. However, our trash is burned for energy and those facilities have high standards of filters for the air.

It's also good to get paint which is as eco friendly as possible (and carries some sort of eco-certification mark on it).
