Help with First Birthday menu

Our daughter is turning one in a little over a week and I'm trying to finalize her first birthday party menu.  The theme is Very Hungry Caterpillar and we're trying to incorporate the items the caterpillar eats through into the menu.  Here's what I have so far...

Fruits and Dip  (either tray on on wooden skewers)

Veggie Tray and Dip

Deli Tray with Buns, cheeses, and assorted condiments

Salad

Either Sweet and Sour Kielbasa and Meatballs in a crockpot or mini sausages wrapped in crescent rolls...can't decide

Cupcakes and Ice Cream for dessert

What does it look like I'm missing?  I feel like there are some big "holes" in the menu but I don't know what to add at this point!  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Help with First Birthday menu

  • I feel like you need a starch of sorts- pasta/potato salad, mac and cheese, something.  That said I'd probably just do the sandwiches and not the meatballs/kilebasa/mini sausages.
  • Agree about the starch.  Also, something vegetarian would be good.  The kielbasa and meatballs don't fit with the rest of your menu at all.  I'd scratch them.
  • Thanks for the suggestions.  I think I'll add my homemade mac and cheese.  I'll scratch the kielbasa and meatballs, too.  I was just adding them because the caterpillar ate through sausage!
  • I get that you're going for a theme, but people will be much more excited about a cohesive menu with good food.

Yes, this is why I never understand themes like that.  Cute?  Sure, but only for the few people that can reference the book in their heads.  Reference the book in your decor and the cake.
