Another person moving to Portland...

The Hubster & I are moving to PDX in Feb. Don't worry, he has a job. :-) We currently live in Raleigh, NC though we have also lived in SoCal, Pittsburgh and Vegas in the last 10 years. We are hoping to make Portland our settle down place. We've been there twice, a week in Dec. and a week in Aug., so we know what to expect & we are pretty sure we want to live on the east side.

So, any suggestions on how to go about getting a place to live before we get there? We have some friends we could stay with for a bit, but I'd like to stay friends with them, so I'd rather not be there for more than a week or two.  :-)

Aside from that, I'm looking forward to joining your board & meeting some new people!

Re: Another person moving to Portland...

  • Are you looking to rent or buy?  Apartment or house?  If you know you want to be on the east side, do you know approx what area - Portland Proper, a close in 'burb (Milwaukie, Clackamas, Gladstone) or further out, like Gresham or Troutdale?  Where will he be working?  That way we know if you need to be close to 205 or I-5, etc.

As I've posted 40 bajillion times lately Stick out tongue, we live in Milwaukie and love it.  The last time we were house hunting we really thought we wanted to move into Portland proper, but we couldn't find what we were looking for.  We ended up staying in Milwaukie because it really does have everything we want.  It's close to everything, it has a decent (and improving) downtown area, but it has a small town feel and is quiet, too.  I like being close to everything I need (freeway, downtown Portland) but not feeling like we're right in the middle of all the traffic.  However, if I was still working in Beaverton we likely would have moved elsewhere because that commute was hellish.

  • We are looking to rent, preferably a house and we want to live in Portland proper, though Milwaukie is on our list as an option. Oh, and The Hubster is keeping his same job & works from home, so we have no worries about a commute. We are more city people than country people though, so we def. want easy access to downtown or at least areas like Hawthorne, Alberta, etc.
  • We don't have room for Steelers fans here.  :) Just kidding....I grew up in Cleveland but went to college in Pittsburgh.  That was fun! :)

We found our rental house (before we ended up buying) on craigslist and it was in the beaumont-wilshire area which is awesome!!! Friends of ours found a rental that is nice on craigslist too about 4 blocks off alberta.  So I'd definitely check it out as you get closer.

  • Pshaw! There's always room for another Steelers fan! :-) Where did you go to college?

I've definitely been scoping out Craigslist to see what's out there and will be sure to keep it on my radar.

  • I went to Duquesne

  • I guess Portland is the place to be, we will be moving there too.  Tell me how it goes.
  • It's sounds like you've done your homework.  When we moved from DC last summer we rented an apartment we found on Craigslist & luckily it worked out just fine.  Sounds like you are already doing that so you are already on your way.

For us personally we were just worried about getting here and finding a small apt temporarily.  I think once you are actually living here full time you find out which neighborhoods and personalities fit you guys best.  Although I think you sound like you already know where you want to be.  I feel like you are way more prepared then we were.  lol

GL & can't wait to meet you!! :)

  • We moved from the 'Burgh too! Can you do me a favor and bring some Mad Mex with you? The problem with PDX is, there's all this *authentic* Mexican food everywhere, lol! So when a girl wants pseudo Mex like a wingarito, she's out of luck!

Oh dude, and some Lulus noodles. We lived off that in college.

Ha! I will be going back in Dec and will get my fix of yummy college food soon.

DH is a big Steeler fan too, but we're more Hockey fans than anything.

Anyway, welcome, and good luck! We love it here, I'm sure you will too. The girls on this board GTG every month or so, and you're more than welcome to attend the next one coming up in Nov. :)

  • Welcome to Portland (in advance).

Definitely check out craigslist. Maybe take a trip 1-1.5 months prior to moving to look at available places. DH made a trip a month before our move to check places we found on craigslist. We ended up renting a condo through Rappold Property Management and had a great experience. There are tons of sfh's for rent in close-in se (hawthorne/richmond). Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies! I'm looking forward to meeting you guys soon & I'm sure I'll have more questions once we arrive.

Scarlett - I'm originally from SoCal & I love authentic Mexican food, but there's a special place in my heart for Mad Mex. :-) I worked there for 2 years & eat there at least once every trip back!  When I get to PDX we'll have to GTG for some Pens games.
