Which E-Reader is Best? Nook v. Kindle v. iPad v. ?

Dear Friends,

I am looking to purchase an e-reader, but I am having a hard time deciding which one is the best overall.  I am getting lost in all the specs and was wondering if you would like to share the pros and cons of the various models out there?

I am an avid reader and am used to checking books out of the library, but I have decided that an e-reader is best for me because I travel frequently and am drawn to the convenience and portability.

I would truly appreciate any and all suggestions!

Thank you.   :)

  • I've been trying to figure this out for myself.  One co-worker has the Kindle & iPad and another has the Nook.  I've played with all three.

I really like the look and feel of the Kindle over the Nook.  However, our local library uses ePUB format for ebooks and the Kindle doesn't support ePUB from what I can tell (the Nook does).    The iPad is too much for what I want to do.   I haven't been able to make a choice, and have just been using a combo of apps on my phone or ebooks on my laptop. • The iPad isn't really meant to be an e-reader.  It doesn't have the e-ink screen that is good for your eyes.

As for Kindle vs. nook, it's personal preference.  People who have Kindles love them, people who have nooks love them.  I have a nook.  It's easy to download books from the library using a nook, which is a big plus for me because it saves money.

I would try both and see which you like more.  Also, check out the Nest Book Club board.  There are a bunch of threads about Kindles and nooks there.

At some point they tried to consolidate a bunch of the information on the book board into a sticky post:

  • Since you like to check books out from the library, I'd first recommend checking and seeing if your local library has any digital media available for checkout in either EPUB or PDF format.  If they do, and you still want to be able to check books out from the library, get a nook.  My wife and I both have nooks and we love them (of course I bought them RIGHT before they dropped in price).  There are software programs out there that let you convert EPUBs to be read on a kindle, but I don't think you can do that with the ones you check out from the library.  Also, just to throw a wrench in to everything, B&N is releasing a NOOKcolor - check it out: http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/Unbound-NOOK-NOOKcolor-and/NOOKcolor-The-Ultimate-Reading-Experience/ba-p/695350
  • The nook color looks amazing!
  • I love my kindle2.  From what I've read comparing Kindle to Nook, the Kindle wins in almost every category.  The iPad is way too much for just an e-reader and the price is still way up there.
  • You could get a large Android phone and not choose. I have both the Kindle Android App and the Nook Android App. Even better, I have the app that lets you download and read any of project Gutenberg's ebooks for free as well.
