Rose question - sorry if it's been asked

My roses have been blooming very well all season long. With the first frost coming soon, is there anything (pruning, etc) I should be doing to "winterize" them? I'm still trying to get them to the shape that I want, I pruned them very heavily this spring. The previous owner of our house didn't prune them at all, and they were out of control. Thanks!

Re: Rose question - sorry if it's been asked

  • It depends on the type of rose. My parents have mostly hybrid teas and live in CA, so my dad prunes back pretty decently each fall. We have heirloom climbers in PA, and the place I bought them said they should be pruned back no more than 1/3, if that. I'm leaving them alone except to cut off blooms and cut back a few stragglers.
