Day after Christmas Open House?

I am new, married 5 years:) DH and I have ALL our family in a 15 minute drive from our house. Holidays were, until last year, a lot of driving around for us. We decided to out our foot down and switch every Thanksgiving/Christmas with Dh mom's side/my parents (DH dad lives wit his gf so that's another holiday to split).....so we thought of doing an open house on December 26th (or shortly after) from 3-7 (or similar time). This way anyone who wants can come over and we get to see evefryone and they can see us at Christmastime. Has anyone done this? What did you have for food/drinks? I was not going to do a sit down or gift exchange, just very casual-football, drinks, appetizers. TIA

Re: Day after Christmas Open House?

  • I just have a couple of thoughts.  Not everybody has the day after Christmas off.  Also 3-7 is dinner time.  Nobody could leave your house at 7, go home cook, eat, on any sort of good time line.  Plus people will have work/school the next day.  So either cook dinner or adjust your time to 1-4.

Those were my thoughts, too, but isn't Christmas on a Saturday this year?  If you have a lot of people in your family who work retail, I wouldn't do it, but otherwise, I think a Sunday would be fine.

  • Anyone who is in school will be off for Christmas break. So that should be an issue. I agree with PP on checking to see who has the day off. I always take the day after Christmas off because that's my shopping day with my bestie and all the women in my family. If you are going to have the open house from 3-7, make some heavy apps. My family never does a "Christmas dinner" on Christmas anymore. We always have apps and things like little smokies and LOTS of sweets! GL! and I think it's a great plan! :)
  • Check with your family and see if they're available/interested, but I think it sounds super fun! PP is right that it's dinner time... but IMO heavy apps are okay. I'm a big fan of apps though...

  • Does your family have lots of togetherness in the days leading up to Christmas?  By the time Christmas rolls around, DH and I are all family'd out.  We would have endured Thanksgiving with one branch of the family and been cheerful and outgoing through open houses and parties and GTGs all season long.  By the time Dec 26th arrives, we often just want to escape and be alone.

If this doesn't describe your family and if your family doesn't work in retail, you could have a good time.

Since this would be a Sunday, I'd also shift the time earlier.  Perhaps 12-4.

  • Thanks for the ideas- no, noone in retail, DH is a teacher, so he's off....

Thank for the advice on times.

DH and I do not do a lot of family time before Christmas-pretty much Christmas Eve/Christmas Day.

I guess we can see how it goes this year:) Hopefully most everyone will like the tradition:)

  • I think it's a good idea to try out.  If it doesn't work, it doesn't work.  If it does, it could become a new tradition.  Just be able to objectively think about how this year went and decide if you want to do it again next year.

I do think a bit earlier would be better--12-4 or 1-4 maybe.  Definitely heavy apps and desserts.

    Have fun!

  • I'm not sure....I'm usually not up for much the day after, I am just trying to relax from the previous busy month! Or hitting the sales. = ) We are also sometimes travelling.

Like the others said, you'd either need to serve dinner or change the time because of the dinner situation.

  • As a guest I would prefer to do something more 12-4 or 1-4 instead.  Serve food heavy apps or a meal.
