Pardon me...

Pardon me for sounding rude or obnoxious by pointing out that I just saw on the news that apparently our president set up a government cell phone program where anyone who is on governmental aid (food stamps, wic, etc.) qualifies to get a free cell phone...

Who pays for this?!? What's your views on it? I am so put off by this!! One person was interviewed and said, "well, ya know, it's not the best phones but their free!" Surprise This just infuriates me for some reason!

Re: Pardon me...

  • They've been running commercials for that for a while now. And for free home phone....as I sit here paying my own. I'm not a fan for any gov't assistance, aside from those harmed serving their country. It's what's wrong with the country and the "what's in it for me" personality. But, I reserve my opinion for political elections and the occassional outburst, instead of ranting here. $h!t like this (programs) pisses me off. :/

  • 1. This has been going on for years.

    2. Does this really surprise you?

    3. It's not like they're getting iPhones. They're getting simple phones with minimal minutes per month. Anything over that, the recipient is required to pay.

  • Other than the commercial, have you confirmed this information? If so, could you send me the link, I haven't heard of this until now.

Silly thing keeps posting without me even being able to respond! Sorry about that! I saw it on the 12 o'clock news today on channel WBRZ..I'm sure it's on their website because it said to check out their website to see if you qualify.
  • Our President didn't set it up. Reagan did - a republican.

    Straight from SafeLinks website:

LIFELINE/SAFELINK FACT SHEETThere is no "Obama phone" or other newly created federal program to provide free cell phones. As you may know, this is a myth that is now circulating on the Web via email and blog sites. It has been thoroughly debunked by independent groups. (See for example: FactCheck.org at http://www.factcheck.org/2009/10/the-obama-phone/, which notes: "Low-income households have been eligible for discounted telephone service for more than a decade. But the program is funded by telecom companies, not by taxes, and the president has nothing to do with it."

The federal "Lifeline" program was created during the Reagan Administration. Lifeline is a federal program created by the Reagan era Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in 1984. The program was enhanced under Telecommunications Act of 1996, which was supported on a broadly bipartisan basis in Congress. The FCC?s Low Income Program of the Universal Service Fund, which is administered by the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC), is designed to ensure that quality telecommunications services are available to low-income customers at just, reasonable, and affordable rates. Lifeline support reduces eligible low-income consumers' monthly charges for basic telephone service.

  • I had a feeling that this wasn't 100% accurate, it's so easy to get biased, and quickly. This has become abundently apparent living in a swing state during election time. I love it when they use voting records that are way outdated.

  • I think it was originally designed with the elderly in mind.

  • It's just odd that the news broadcasted the information. It doesn't seem like they would be able to do such a thing if it were false information. I'm pretty sure I wasn't hearing things..Unless the news channel is more biased in their broadcasts which does happen frequently.

*ding ding ding* its sad but true, almost all stations lean to one side or the other and then of course the more sensational the better.
