iris and other bulb plants

in June I bought a beautiful house that had a full garden of iris' and other bulb plants (not sure how else to explain it) and I live in MN  and with winter coming I just was wondering if there are any things I need to do to these plants to prepare for winter and just any help or advice with these plants would help since I moved here from arizona the types of plants are a big change from cactus' and palm trees and cleaning the pool to  big yards and lots of gardens : )

Thanks for the help

Re: iris and other bulb plants

  • Do you know what other kinds of bulbs there are?  Have they been there for a while or did you just plant them?

You shouldn't need to do anything with the irises just leave them in the ground.  I live in WI so we have very similar weather.  Things like tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and allium should all be left in the ground.  They are perennials and should come up every year if they aren't eaten by squirrels or chipmunks.

Other things like calla lilies need to be dug up every fall because they can't handle the cold weather but they aren't very common around here because of that.

  • Well we bought the house in June and Im not a big plant person.. I had to go on google images to figure out what they were. I just remember when I was a kid my mom had a plant that came from a bulb that in the fall once it turned brown she would cut the leaves off of it..

    Thanks for the help!!

  • Well you can cut brown leaves off if you don't like the look of them but you don't have to if you're lazy like me.  Stick out tongue  They will come back either way.
  • Most bulbs are like bears. They just hibernate in the winter.
