Hi VA Nesties - questions about Charlottesville...

Hi all, I'm considering accepting a position at UVa and while both DH and I really like Charlottesville, I'd love to get an insiders perspective. We had two little boys as well as two small dogs so I know that would make renting slightly difficult. I'd love to hear any suggestions regarding housing or anything else you think I should know :) Thanks!!

Re: Hi VA Nesties - questions about Charlottesville...

  • Howdy jacksmom!

We just moved to Richmond from Charlottesville, where I lived for 13 years and my husband lived for 10.  I miss it so much and we plan to move back in a few years after I finish with school.  It is a WONDERFUL place to live and a great place for kids.  With both children and dogs I would suggest looking in the neighborhoods of belmont or somewhere else close to downtown.  There are a couple of dog parks and lots of families with children- depending on where you are there is an elementary school within walking distance in Belmont (I want to say Clark elementary but I'm not positive on that).  I would recomend staying a safe distance (a mile or two) from the univeristy- UVA has an extensive Greek Life and lots of bars on the Corner and it can be disruptful on the weekends.  If you are looking to be outside of the city a little Albemarle County has lots of beautiful cabins for rent you just have to look a little harder- I would suggest looking at craigslist.com for those.

     Good Luck!

  • Thanks kgray, much appreciated! It's funny, not one person I've talked to has anything bad to say about Charlottesville - it seems like it's basically the best place on earth :)

We're headed up there next month and will do some looking, thank you for the info, I really do appreciate it!

  • Hi Jacksmom!   I, too, live in Charlottesville, having moved here from Atlanta about a year and a half ago.  It's a much different place than the big city where I lived prior, but I have grown to love it.  I think Charlottesville offers some great activities for families (parks, farms, etc).  I rent a town house about 3-4 miles from campus and there are plenty of families with kids and pets.  Let me know if you have any specific questions about the area and I will be glad to help!

  • I just moved from VA, but my cousin lives in C'ville and I've been up to visit her many times there.  She also has two little boys.  There are definitely family-friendly areas there.  They own a home, so I'm probably not much help regarding housing.  Its a beautiful area though.  Pretty hills, close to the Shenandoah Valley...and rich with history.

This exactly.  I moved here 2.5 yrs ago and love it more every day!  Definitely avoid the Corner area if you want quiet/affordable housing.
  • I know I'm late in this post, but we love Charlottesville too. It's a great place. We actually live right outside of C'ville, in Greene County. A little more affordable, but still only about a 20 minute drive away (I work in Charlottesville, so the commute isn't awful). It's more country which we enjoy, instead of being right in the heart of Charlottesville.
