Can someone explain to me how The Melting Pot works?
We just got one not to far from here and I am looking at the menu. It seems a little expensive but i'd love to try it out!
Re: Can someone explain to me how The Melting Pot works?
That's where we went this weekend! I was just talking about it in a post earlier today!
I wasn't sure what to expect either, but it was easy. You're right that it's expensive, but DH and I thought it was a lot of food. I was SO full. My disclaimer here is that DH doesn't eat like a "typical" male, he usually eats the same amount as I do - I know some wives have to make much more for their husbands dinners, so I wanted to put that out there.
Assuming they all work the same, here was how it went... There's a cheese course, a salad course, a meat course, then the dessert course. They have a "big night out" that features a specific style of food. It gives you the cheese dish, salad dish, and dessert, and then you pick 1 of 3 meat choices. It's made for 2 people, so I can see how this would be easy if it sounds good. Ours was French. Blech. We didn't pick this option.
We picked from the menu for all 4 courses. If you want info on which ones we picked, let me know.
For each course, they brought out a new pot and started it up for us. The pot is in the middle of the table and it's built into the table. They basically do everything for the fondue - you just stab things and put it in there.
It was kind of a lot of work for the meat course because you could have up to 3 bites going at once. I'm sure I overcooked some, but sometimes I just couldn't tell!
The dessert was amazing, of course. If we go back, we're going to try to get cheese and dessert only.
For your first time though, get the whole thing! The salad seems silly, but mine was really good! I got the house salad and the dressing was delicious, whatever it was!
You're right that it was expensive... our total bill with tip was about $115. It was our anniversary celebration and DH did have 2 alcoholic drinks which was about $14 (he tipped the bartender a couple bucks which is included in that total).
I hope that helps - let me know if you want more info. We just went Sunday so it's fresh in my mind!
I LOVE the melting pot. I've celebrated many a thing there, including my bachelorette party. Did you have any specific questions?
First, the fondue pots. The most people I've seen share a pot are four. I think they like to keep it to two people per fondue. I can't recall if ala carte prices are shown per person or per pot... I think they're per person.
Melting Pot offers four courses for you to choose from. A Cheese Course (shared), salads (individual), "entree" (shared), and, of course, desserts (shared). There are many options under each category.
You can order any of the courses you want individually, but probably the easiest thing you can do is get the "Big Night Out" (listed on the menu). The total price is about $90 USD per couple before drinks/taxes/tips, and includes a shared cheese fondue course, individual salads, a shared entree fondue, and a shared dessert.
My favorites/notes:
1) Yin Yang. It's a godiva chocolate alcoholic beverage. Just do it. It's fantastic. Better than a milkshake.
2) Flaming Turtle chocolate fondue. Chocolate/Carmel/Pecans... all briefly lit on fire... so good.
3) When they bring the meat out for the entree portion, it's all raw. It's kind of scary, handling raw food, but i"ve never had a problem. Just keep the meat in until it looks cooked, and do not eat directly from the fondue forks (they've touched raw meat).
4) During the entree portion, you're likely to "lose" some food in the pot. No worries... they give you a search and rescue spoon.
I hope that helps! Trust me: if you do the four course meal, you will NOT leave hungry.
Oh, and most important of all...
At least in Chicago, Thursday nights after 5pm are "Ladies Nights." Ladies get a shared cheese course, an individual salad and the dessert course for some ridiculous price of like... $20.
LOVE IT!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Melting Pot. DH will go and he enjoys it, but it's by far not his favorite place to go. I won't get into the details because I think PPs pretty much covered it all. (good job ladies!)
As much as I love this place, one piece of advice, you STINK when you leave. It's not that it's gross, but you smell like food, and it's strong! I guess it's from the pot in front of you and all the steam in the restaurant from all of the pots cooking, but it gets into your clothes and hair. I have to immediately take a shower when I get home...especially since I have long hair. This might just be my hang up, and it definitely doesn't prevent me from going back time and time again, but just a heads up.
The food is delicious. Oh, and if you are planning an evening out, make sure you don't have a time limit. It's not a quick meal. It's definitely a 'take your time and relax' kind of place. I don't think we've eaten in less than a hour and a half. But it's enjoyable.
lol!!! ... What??? I've never had this experience!
Really? That's funny.
Like I said, this could just be all in my head. But if I go and smell the clothes I was wearing the next day, I want to throw up. Maybe it's just here in MD...my friends have said the same thing. Interesting....
LoL, I'm going to be all paranoid now next time I go to the MP.
I feel the exact same way! Maybe ours is just not well ventilated b/c my clothes always reek like cooking bouillon or something when we leave there! hehe
FWIW, we've been about 3 times total and I will ONLY go when I find out they have some specials going on. Normally we're able to get a 3-course meal for $20-$25/person. Otherwise its really expensive, and IMO not worth the cost b/c YOU have to cook all your food! Its a neat experience and fun, but b/c of the price I will only go when they've got something going on to make it worthwhile.
