XP: St. Johnsbury/VT fall trips

Hi from an Upstate NY nestie!

DH and I are trying to plan our vacays for next year and I've always wanted to rent a cabin in the fall in VT (I've never been)

There are some amazing ones, at reasonable $ that we're finding on the net but our faves are in the St. Johnsbury area. Crazy to think 1 year out for a trip a couple states over but they book up fast, especially in fall.

Just curious what the town is like, any advice, etc.

Thanks so much.

  • I am from a neighboring town. It's a great area, but there is not a lot to do. A few small shops, hiking, apple picking, etc. For more great places to shop and eat you would want to be near Stowe, Montpelier or Burlington. But for a weekend you can find some things to do to have fun (depending on what you are looking for).

  • Thanks for the info- we'll keep that in mind. Actually, hiking and relaxing are what we'd be looking to do most, but we do love good food so would want at least a couple of good places to try out for dinner, etc.

  • Elements in St. J is a great restaurant! http://www.elementsfood.com/

If you feel like driving a bit for amazing food, half an hour north of St. J (in Newport) are Lago www.lagotrattoria.com (Donald Sutherland eats there whenever he's at his house here!) and the Eastside (no website)

  • My favorite place to eat in the area is The River Garden Cafe. Yum!!! Love love it! Also great are the Wildflower Inn and the Tamarack Grill at Burke Mtn.
