Genetic Counseling

Has anyone done this? Any recommendations? Positive or negative feedback?

DH is adopted and has never met his biological parents, so we don't know his family medical history. We've talked about seeing a genetic counselor prior to trying to get pregnant, but haven't done extensive research yet and wonder if it is really worth the effort. I'm due for a physical soon, so I plan to talk with my PCP. (As well as internet research, obviously.)

TIA!

Re: Genetic Counseling

  • We didn't, I wasn't really worried.

When I got pregnant, I had a slew of bloodwork done that would reveal a bit of information and we opted for the Nuchal Translucency screening (NT scan) when I was 12 weeks (you get follow up bloodwork around 18 weeks). I'll likely need to have an amnio for #2 based on my age.

That is all we did (which is more than what most of my friends have done).

  • We did it.  I had to write a paper about genetic counseling last semester which prompted me to think about it for ourselves.  We were already TTC at that point.  H and I started talking about the what if's and and our family history.  I have a great-aunt with DS and H had a great-uncle with DS.  We decided to go to genetic counseling to find out if we were at any increased risk for this or anything else.  Most insurance companies cover the counseling (ours didn't at the time but the cost was only $300.)  We learned a lot, and I thought it was well worth it.  We went to the Feingold Center in Waltham.
