DR. Update

Everythings seems it is a go!!! We are ready to have a baby. We are going to wait until november becasue since I was diagonised with level 4 MVP (Mitral Valve Prolapse) my cardiologist wants to monitior me a few more weeks and also we have been struggling to find a donor. Our doctor gave us a few cryo banks: California Cryo, Pacific repo, FairFax. Does anyone else know of any others or have heard positive/negative things of the ones I listed?

Re: DR. Update

  • Our RE's office will only work with specimens frm 3 banks. California Cryo, Fairfax and one here in NJ. We went with CCB. We had a very positive experience with them. They have been doing this a long time and seem to have a good track record.

Good luck on the hunt for the perfect match for you!

  • We're a couple of years from having a baby, but I researched sperm bank regulation in law school for a paper, and decided at that time that we will be going with California Cryobank. Not only do they have very vigorous testing and very high standards, people seem to be happy with the customer service and the availability of information about each donor.

  • We're using CCB. We've set up our account but haven't purchased yet. I like that you can purchase and order vials to be shipped online. Oh, and they recently lowered their shipping prices.

  • CCB has a decent track record but they dilute their samples and you end up with low post thaw numbers. We ended up needing refunds on every sample we bought, different donors even :-(  Fairfax is amazing as is their sister bank CLI. Good Luck!
  • Wow, that is so exciting that you are *thisclose* to starting! Congrats!

Our biggest struggle with finding a donor has been finding donors that match (as nearly as possible) my wife's genetic makeup. Last I looked, California Cryo had 17 black donors, and Fairfax had 8. (Not exactly the hundreds and hundreds you have to choose from if you are seeking a white donor... grrr... but I digress.)

We'll probably use Fairfax, primarily because it is local to us so we can pick up the vials instead of having them shipped. Also, from what I've seen so far, it seems like they are quite thorough in their testing.

I found this comparison sheet useful (though of course it is from Fairfax itself, so is obviously not the most unbiased source of information):

And here's a comparison sheet from California Cryo (same caveat as above):

    Good luck with your search!

  • We used Fairfax (primarily because of their location - when we started we did ICIs at home and L could go to to Fairfax and get the specimens - saving us shipping/courier.  When we went with an RE, they would courier them to the office for a nominal fee.)  We didn't have any issues with them and have 2 kids to show for it! Good luck!!!
