We hung out with our friends this weekend and none of them would be able to make it the only weekend I could host a Christmas party. They all said they're free NYE and I should host then instead.
Here's the thing: I totally doubt my ability to put together a rollicking good time for 25 people. I'm normally in bed by 9 most nights and everyone teases me about my inability to stay out and party. I don't really care much for NYE. I've never even been to a NYE party at someone's house before to know what I should do. A Christmas party is much more my style.
We live out in the county and DH will do fireworks at midnight (he's well-known in our circle for his shows), but that's all I know. There are no big public festivities within a 2 hour radius (just small-town stuff), so my party would be it for those who come.
WDYT? Would you host for a holiday that's not your style? Anyone have any tips for a good NYE party? Anyone want to describe one they went to at someone's house that worked well? What time should it start?
Re: Darn, no xmas party. NYE instead?
What about a New Years day party?
Late Brunch/Lunch at about 1pm?
I have some friends that do one every year and I look forward to it so much.
Watch football, talk, play cards.
Just a casual get together with incredible food.
Now that sounds like a tradition I could get with, JJ
I like it. I'll mull it over.
Still open to other suggestions - the thread doesn't have to end here

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
NYE parties are EASY. Fingerfoods, BYOB but if you want have a couple bottles of champagne for toasting. Best NYE party I went to was a pajama NYE party, everyone wore pj's so it was soooo comfy, we drank, they had fun music in the background so there was singing and dancing and just normal party chaos. You don't need much for 25 people, people can entertain themselves for the most part.
Just have apps. oh and maybe jello shooters when people walk in:)
and an energy drink for you before hand!
I totally understand what you mean. This harvest party I had Sat wasn't really my style since it's not my favorite holiday but, it was really really fun trying something different.
I don't really like NYE either, but you could do a dessert/champagne party that could start late- around 9-10 and then have a few activities before midnight, maybe something with resolutions or one of those party games for adults, have everyone wear silly hats/noisemakers... set the table with blue and white ornaments and candles.. have plenty of alcohol on hand with music, and I think it would be great!
I think this is a great idea!
Hi there! Sorry I didn't post earlier... my littlest one fell off of the ladder on our slide and fractured her right shoulder. My Mom was watching her
DH and I took her to a Pediatric ER and they said she doesn't have to wear a cast and it will heal on its own. She's OK now. sorry that's probably TMI.
Anyways - I have hosted small gatherings on NYE. I LOVE it! My babies are asleep by then and I make a bunch of appetizers and we ring in the NY with a champagne toast and then... some our our braver friends join us outside in our goofy hot tub. (Last year it was 20 degrees out). I think fire works would be awesome.
The thing about NYE is the drinking... and the last night partying. I can understand why it wouldn't be your favorite holiday because it does seem to be about the booze... and the friends we have over are responsible enough to either stay and sleep in our lower level - or they take taxis home. If you host one of these - may want to have cards with the local taxi numbers on it. MY BFF and her husband stay and we put on our PJ's after everyone else leaves and hang out. That's about it! HTH
Another vote for the NYD brunch!
You could do a fun spin on the traditional NYD foods, like greens and black eyed peas...fancy them up a bit. Or serve some "high class" hangover foods, like mini slider burgers, mac and cheese balls, etc...
I know your style and you're probably wanting to do a bit fancy. You could totally pull off the brunch.
