another neighbor related issue..

The townhome behind us, I think they're fairly new residents. They have a small dog that frequently during the evening, we'll hear barking. It's never for a LONG period of time, but it's frequently for a few minutes. We can hear it while sitting on our couch watching TV which is a good 15 feet from the wall that we share with them.

Our neighbors right next to us also have a dog, and I swear that dog never barks.

ETA: It's a high pitch barking, not a deep bark.

Would you say anything?

What/how would you say it? Write a letter? Call the non-emergency police? Talk to them? (we've never met them) Get over it?

Re: another neighbor related issue..

  • I wouldn't call the police just yet.

If the family just recently moved in, perhaps the dog is still adjusting to its new surroundings and the barking will go away sometime soon.

If it's still a problem in a few weeks or a month, you could stop by to "introduce yourself" to your new neighbors and mention in the conversation that they must have a dog because you've heard barking. Or if you see the dog, say something like "oh, there's the little guy we've been hearing!" You're making them aware that you can hear the dog without directly complaining. Maybe they don't realize how much you can hear on the other side of the wall.

If it persists after that, and it's really bothering you, maybe talk to them again? Or check with your HOA to see if they have any rules about pet noise and see if they will deal with it?

  • I think hearing dogs bark is part of the downside of townhome, apartment or condo living.

Now if it was going on forever, and after your city's noise ordinance was in effect, that would be different. Our dog barks at the doorbell on the TV sometimes, and if someone is really at our door, it takes us a couple minutes to get her to stop.

There are definitely many benefits to living in a town home (we do!), but there are a few nuisances too...

They've been there at least a few months..maybe since end of July? Not 100% sure.

    True.

Lately our townhome/neighborhood is becoming more and more of a drag to live in. Add to it the fact that we've decided to stay there until the market is better (when we were hoping to be out within a year)... we're really not lovin' it. Oh well, such is life, right?

This.  I like never having to mow the lawn, but I wish it had the noise level of a private home.

Yeah, we're ending up here much longer than we wanted too. We were originally hoping to sell this year or next, but we'll be here until the market rebounds a little.

  • Considering the barking is probably going on when they are gone I would just let them know. They probably don't even know it's happening.
