Help me decide...iPhone or Blackberry

DH wants to get me a new phone for Christmas and I'm clueless. I only need text, email, pics, games and music but I'm sure I'd love all the other extras on the iPhone. I also have an iPod/iTunes library that would transfer right to the new phone. I also have friends who swear the BB is better. Help! Thanks for any advise.

Re: Help me decide...iPhone or Blackberry

  • The thing is, it's really a matter of personal preference. You need to go to your cell phone provider and play with an iPhone and play with a Blackberry.

As for me? I'd never have a Blackberry. My friends that have one are constantly complaining that they freeze up and don't work right. DH calls them a "Crackberry".

I adore my iPhone, and couldn't see myself having any other phone. The extras are fun, it does everything I need, it looks good, I don't get a lot of problems with it, etc. I really enjoy having the iPhone.

  • My parents have Blackberries and hate them. I played with my mom's when I was considering a new phone and thought it was pretty awful. The keys were not terribly touch-sensitive, the layout was unappealing, and the phone was far less intuitive than an iPhone or Droid-based phone.

  • The only things I like about my H's Blackberry (he's got a Bold) over my iPhone (3GS) are the actual physical keys to press and BBM, but there are cross platform apps that function like BBM, and if I don't try to speed type the virtual keyboard is fine.

There are many more things that my H loves about my iPhone, including how much easier it is to navigate the web.

I agree with the suggestion above, go in and spend some time playing with both phones (or find friends that have them).  Make sure you play with the functions you think you'd need most and see what you think.

  • I prefer the iPhone over a Blackberry mainly because of surfing the internet. Two completely different experiences.

  • I currently have the Droid (Verizon's version of the iPhone)  but I've also had a Blackberry.  I definitely like the Droid better!  Just like someone before me mentioned the Blackberry is great because of the actual keyboard, but you get used to the touch screen.  The Droid I have actually has a pull out keyboard, but it's awful, so it stays closed all the time.

As soon as Verizon gets the iPhone I am going to get that.  I would recommend the iPhone, but definitely go to the stores and experience them for yourself before you decide on one.  Have fun with them!

  • Since it appears that most responders prefer the iPhone over the Blackberry, I thought I'd share my thought on my beloved Blackberry in case you are still deciding ...

I have been a Blackberry user since 2004 and can't imagine changing to a new phone.  I am now on my third phone (I get very attached to them and don't like to upgrade very often).  I have the Tour and I love it.  I have all five of my e-mail addresses forwarded to my phone, so I can stay up to date at all times.  There are also great features that are extremely convenient and useful.  The keyboard is great.  The size is perfect and allows you to type messages with one hand while holding it.  There are neat applications and games you can download.  The internet has always worked well for me.  The screen is of course smaller compared to the iPhone, but you can zoom in and navigate easily.  Additionally, the phone itself feels more substantial than the iPhone.  The iPhone seems more delicate, whereas the Blackberry is thicker.  Mine has survived countless falls to the ground and is still running strong.

It appears that more people prefer the iPhone nowadays.  My boyfriend has an iPhone and a Blackberry and likes the internet searching on the iPhone better but says the touch keyboard is a pain.  I have an iTouch and enjoy playing games on it and it, but I personally think the Blackberry is more functional as a phone, e-mail tool and calendar/organizer.

I'm definitely out-voted on this one!  Good luck with your decision.   :)

  • Thanks so much for all the great information! I will definitely go in and play with both and then decide but it helps a lot to get opinions from all of you. Cheers!

  • I had a BlackBerry before I got my iPhone and I had nothing but constant issues... If it wasn't one thing, it was another...  I was on my 5th refurb before I finally gave up and upgraded to the iPhone 4 in June. One just never worked right. One had a broken camera. Two had broken trackballs. Etc.....

The iPhone is so user friendly it's ridiculous. Really, I wish I had more spare time in my life to just sit down and play with this thing!

  • I've never had a blackberry, but prior to getting the iphone, I had a blackjack and DH has a droid.  I have never loved another phone like I love my iphone.  It is awesome and sooooo user friendly.  It totally is the best, and you won't regret it.
