Update (and speculation)

Hi, ladies. I hope everyone is well. I'm posting from our lovely laptop in our deluxe suite (ha) ....way, way out in the boonies of NH that I've never been in before. :)

Im going to try to keep this short by necessity.  Long and short is that I started having timeable contrax on Wednesday afternoon. The on call suggested I try to get some sleep b/c it sounded like I might have contracted a virus. I managed to get some sleep that night, but at 10am on Thursday, the contrax resumed, quickly coming 3 mins apart. I called the office, they had me come in for a NST (all 1-2 mins apart and an exam found me 50% effaced) and my favorite OB, Dr. W, said he'd meet me at the hospital.

Put me on muscle relaxers, gave me a betamethazone shot to mature Molly's lungs, and just hung out in a holding pattern for a while. 2pm exam showed me at no cervical change- closed, 50%. Contrax. ebbed long enough for me to be allowed to eat a late lunch at 3pm.  At 4, they returned in a fury. My nurse called W back from his dinner, he arrived, checked me, and found me 90% effaced. (!) Still closed, though, but that was enough progress to warrant me being transferred by ambulance to a hospital equipped with a NICU that can handle a 30 week gestation baby girl.  B&W in Boston was obscenelly busy, so I was placed at DH.

I got here, was checked and found to be 50% effaced (confusing), and they did a quick and dirty U/S of the baby and found her breech. She was head down at St. Joe's- and i think that's why the effacement happened so quickly and then kind of back tracked when she changed position.

I got two more doses of the relaxers, last one at 530 this morning. I also got about an hour and a half of sleep last night due to the monitors and the penicillin b/c my GBS results have not come back yet. The high risk obs came in at 9 to tell me they were going to take me off the relaxers to see if I could get these under control on my own. Which I didn't. I continued to have contrax all day, off and on. I had a high level U/S at about 330 on the most detailed machine I've ever had a U/S on. We even saw that Molly has a full head of hair. :) It's still short, but she's got a headful. And she was gracious enough to smile (literally) at the camera. After all kinds of measuring and checking every single organ, they estimated her size at 4 lbs 2 oz. Thanks, Quiznos, thanks a lot.

I had my last exam not too long ago, again with no change. It's encouraging, but after the U/S, we know that Miss Molly is again changing position. She's now head down diagonal (not quite engaged). They've decided to keep me one more night for observation in case she gets herself situated agian and manages to get me completely effaced and possibly start dialating me, since I'm having contrax still.

I've been told to NOT expect, after all this, to hit my original due date or the scheduled C at 38 weeks. They are hoping to get me to 34, but knowing that Miss Molly can get things moving in a hurry means that I will need to go home and immediately get a bag packed and be ready for a little preemie. I think I will be having an October baby. As long as she's strong, she can come whenever she wants. If she is head down, they want me to try a VBAC, whereas if she is breech, it will be an immediate C.

That's all the news that is fit to print. DH is finally starting to not look like a deer caught in headlights.  However, just in case, we've brought our camera and video camera (he was prepared). Thanks so much for all the well wishes, they are so appreciated. :)  After all the tests and observation, we are quite content that even at this early stage, Molly is a strong and healthy baby who just might need a little help for a few weeks to get herself started. Fortunately, my sister was born at 29.5 weeks, so I am no stranger to NICU life. I hope to avoid it if I can, but at least I know what I can be getting myself into.

Time to pick up a few preemie/newborn outfits, I guess.

  • It's good to hear from you!!!  I hope she can hold out until 34 weeks, but it is good to know she is doing so well otherwise and that she appears to be so strong right now.

  • Stay in there little one!! Heather, my thoughts are with you!

    *~*~*anti labor dust*~*~*?

  • Oh Heather, its good to hear from you !!!  I'm sorry this is happening but it sounds like you are trying your best to be positive about everything, which is really important.  I hope the night is uneventful for you and you are able to retreat home sometime tomorrow and prepare for everything.   (( Big hugs))

P.S  I hope the ambulance crew was super nice and you had a nice ride up to Dhart.   I'm now working for that ambulance company!  = )

  • glad to hear that delivery was avoided for now.  Hopefully molly will hold out for a few more weeks.
  • We are doing okay and don't need much of anything. My mom is at our house with Alex, so we are covered. :)

Maura, I had Chris & Chris for the drive up. It was like a freaking comedy show. Except for the part where the road to this boondock is totally peppered with potholes. ugh.

  • I was thinking of you last night and thought that ride had to suck! ?I really hope things calm down for you guys. ?This one is giving you a run for your money already!!! ?You know I'm here if you need me. ?((hugs))
  • Thanks for finding the time to post, Heather - it is good to hear you being so positive and it sounds like the medical staff you are working with are amazing...hang in there, I can't imagine how scary it all is - and you STAY in there MOLLY! You're going to have to ground her as soon as she is born ;) If there is anything at all that you need, I'm here... *HUGS*
  • My BF had her baby at 30 weeks (her name is Molly too) and she is doing SUPER!!!  Good Luck with everything and sending well wishes to you@  Stay in there Miss Molly!

  • As always, Heather, you sound like you're handling this curve in the road amazingly well.  I'm in awe because I think I might be a trainwreck.  I am SO GLAD to hear that things are looking alright, and that Molly is showing to be a strong little gal.  I hope that you can get to 34 weeks but if you don't that everything will still be just fine, with Molly just needing some extra nudging to get where she needs to be for complete health.  You're in my prayers, Heather!
  • I've done that ride in an ambulance before (going to rehab in Salem after my accident) but fortunately I don't really remember it.  I hope that things will go well for you and Molly and let me know if I can help out with Alex at all, ok?
  • Oh heather!  I hope Milly stays in there for a few more weeks at least!  She is just so anxious to wear all her new clothes dontcha know?  You and your family will all be in my thoughts and prayers!  Good Luck!
  • Wow, you sound so postitive about it all, which is great!  The one thing I kept hearing while DS was in the NICU was how well female babies do as preemies.  And that's a great weight for her age! We were at SNHMC nicu, but I always heard how top notch Dartmouth was as well.  Best wishes to you!

  • Heather, I'll be thinking of you guys.  Lots of prayers going your way. It's always the girls that demand a little extra attention ;)
  • Wow Heather! What a crazy few days. I am so glad that Molly is sticking put for a while at least. I know that DHMC will take good care of you both for as long as you need it. It sounds like she is strong and healthy even this early. I think Quiznos did you a service beyond the delicious sandwich! :)
  • Heather- Best wishes for an uneventful few weeks! I hope that Molly is able to stay in and bake a bit longer, but if she should come sooner than later I hope that she has a smooth road. Don't forget that there are other NICUs and Special Care Nurseries down here closer to home that you could have her transferred to once the Dr's feel like she's stable enough for transport. Hopefully this is all unnecessary! Best wishes!

  • Thinking about you Heather!! I hope she stays put a little longer for you!!
  • omg h!

i am keeping you all in my thoughts!!! rest up and LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED ANYTHING<<<<   even if its mac and cheese for the little man!  ill make it homemade and bring it up to you guys... or down to you guys, wherever you are!!!!!

  • I am just caching up on some posts and I waned to let you  know I'll be thinking of you.  Hopefully Miss Molly will wait till 34 weeks.
