fever help??

So Ryan is sick :( fever since yesterday but really no other symtoms, tugging his ear a bit but not sure if that was teething or ear...anyway, I brought him to the pedi today and at that time (1:00) his fever was 103.  They gave him Motrin.  Everything checked out fine - ears, throat, etc.  Dr said that this must be the virus of the week and she has seen many kids this week with a fever and no other symptoms - some with high fevers.  Came home, he napped and then I took temp again, it was around 102.  At 5:30 he fell asleep in my arms - totally UNLIKE him.  I changed him, took his temp again and it was 104....So I have him tylenol.  Just gave him a lukewarm bath as the on call nurse recommended....put him to bed.  Am going to wake him up at 10 to check temp and maybe give more tylenol. What else could/should I be doing?  the nurse said fever 105 and above is considered dangerous so wwe will keep our eye out for that...I'm kind of freaking out here, his temp has never been this high......

Re: fever help??

  • There is not really much else you can do than what you are doing.  You should alternate motrin/tylenol/motrin/tylenol.  Your next dose of motrin should be around 8-9pm.  Its good for 6-8 hours.. so whatever time works for you.  Offer him lots of fluids.  He probably will refuse them, but keep it handy just incase.  And just monitor his temp.  You'll also want to keep an eye on his diapers.. how many wet diaper is he having, or how full are they etc.   GL!!  Hopefully it passes soon!!
  • Thanks Maura - he has been eating and drinking prettty normally for him.  when i wake him to check the temp and give more meds, should i try and give him water or pedialyet?  he is still not good with the sippy cup so i will maybe try to give it to him in a bottle if you think i should....

  • Yes, I would offer it to him when you wake him for meds, or when he wakes on his own.  Giving him water in a bottle is just fine.  The important part is having him drink it and however he does that is fine, even if he wakes in the middle of the night offer it to him. Water or pedialyte is fine.  I would give whatever he is used too, and more likely to take.  I would periodically check on him throughout the  night, feeling his forehead and taking him temp.  YOu don't want it to get too high or he could start to seize.  That usually happens with temps 105 and higher.  Just keep your eye on him.  Fluids will also help to bring down the fever.     GL!!!  Try and get some sleep while you can.  When Brianna is sick, she turns into a cuddle bug and just wants to be held all night long = )
  • Awww, poor baby!! High temps are scary :( Any fluids, juice, popsicles, whatever you can get in him. Smoothies are good too, because when Maddie has a fever she usually won't eat anything, so the smoothies get extra calories in her. I keep a sippy of water next to her crib because she'll inevitably wake up screaming for it. She had a high temp virus with a bit of a cold last week and it lasted a couple days but then she was fine. Hope he's feeling better soon!
  • no advice but I hope Ryan feels better soon, or I guess he is fine, lets hope the fever goes down!
