newbie: crocheting

i know how to crochet and want to make some scarves for christmas, but the yarn i bought last night (which i thought would make awsome scarves) is a PITA to work with!!!

anyone has advice as to what type of yarn would be best to work with?

Re: newbie: crocheting

  • When I crochet a scarf or a blanket I prefer to use the Caron Simply Soft yarn.  It's easy to work with, and it stays soft even after several washes.  Just try to avoid anything that will fray easily or anything with fringe especially when you're making a scarf and you are using a smaller hook anyway.  Good luck!

  • Ditto PP's recommendation of Caron's Simply Soft.

I don't like to use lumpy art yarns for crochet.  (I save those for knitting.)

But anything that's a consistent thickness is going to be pretty easy to work with.

  • I agree, the simply soft is great because it's really smooth and easy to work with.  I also like Bernat Boucle yarn - it's fluffier, but still smooth enough that it doesn't stick to the hook and it's still fairly easy to find the stitches.  It's great if you prefer something a little fluffier.
