Texting in sick?

My co-worker just texted in sick.  On top of that he texted the part-time employee instead of myself or our manager.  Is it really that difficult to call in or at least leave the message on the voicemail saying your're sick?  I know why he did it, because he's full of crapola and not sick!

Has anyone texted in sick?  Had a co-worker text in sick?

Re: Texting in sick?

  • I have not texted in sick because I value my job too much. Who does that?

I love my puppy ... and my husband, I swear!
  • First off, I'm not even able to text in sick since I'm at 3 different schools and even if I could, I would N.E.V.E.R. Pick up the phone and call in dude. Fake a cough or something but geez, at least call.

  • I have emailed and called my boss when I was going to be out.  I have texted co-workers to give them a heads up I'll be out.

  • I have emailed and texted as a follow up to a co-worker. I was really sick and explained the reason to her, not my boss. That's the way this place is - normally I would call and leave a message on my boss's voicemail but the place I work is totally weird and random.

  • It depends on your job!

    Yes, I've texted in sick.
I used to try and call my boss, but he never answered the phone and we don't have voicemail at my work and he doesn't check his cell phone messages either...so YES I've texted in sick - it's the only way he will respond to!!!

True. I could totally do that at my old job with my supervisor but I still usually called. I was just thinking about my job now.

  • This guy has my cel our manager's cel.  If you're going to text at least text us and not the part-time worker in the shipping department.  He's just avoiding us.  One reason why I can't stand him!

  • I always text in sick.  That's the first line of communication my supervisor will get/respond to.  I always let her know to call me if she needs anything.

  • I have a good relationship with my boss so I would more than likely send her a text message, especially if it's before 7am and then follow up with a phone call.

  • I totally plan on texting in sick to my client very soon.

In fact, I craft exactly what I am going to say while I'm driving in each morning.

Damn this new client for making me come in everyday.

  • Would I do it in my current sitch? No. My boss would have a cow. Though she does allow you to email in sick, which I think makes more sense. No one is there at 7 a.m. to answer your sick call, anyway. And they could more likely miss a vmail instead of an email.

It's 2010 though. People have started doing it and will keep doing it. Get ready for a lottt of social/profesh. faux-pas from the past becoming suuuuper common place in the future (as I'm sure you've already experienced).

We're simply decomposing as a society. Mwahahha

exactly. at my old job, they had a rule that you had to talk to someone in person AND call in at least an hour before you were due in. those two do NOT mesh if you're an early arriver!

  • I sent my coworker a text yesterday saying I wasn't coming in. Our office is on-call 24/7 and I honestly didn't want to talk to the person that would answer. I don't think anyone had a problem with it since they all do the same thing, but our boss LOVES texting and there are only 5 people in our office.
  • I write people up for this.  Voicemail is a No-No too.  They MUST speak to me.
