This has been asked a MILLION times before...

And I am sorry for that... But I want to know the proper steps that I need to take to have my last name finally changed to my husband's. What the heck do I do first?

Thanks ladies.....

Re: This has been asked a MILLION times before...

  • If I remember correctly you go to the social security office first. Then to the DMV and then you change everything else.
  • The first-first thing you need are certified copies of your marriage licence. Go to the county records office for whatever county you were married in. You technically only need one, but get two or three. It's a waste of time and more expensive to go back.

Then like pp said, go to SS and DMV. Everything else is pretty easy once you have your SS card and drivers licence. BTW, I didn't want to wait for my SS card to arrive, so I took the confirmation from SS to the DMV and that worked. That was before the changed the rules on documentation, though.

  • I got my certified copy then I went to the DMV because them told me that SS would take my certified copy for a week (which they didn't).
  • I'm not sure if you want to spend the money to do this but there is a website missnowmrs.com which will get you all the papers and show you the exact steps you need to do to change your name.  It's $29.95 for a 6 mo. membership and it will literally write up all the letters to send to social security, DMV, credit cards, professional associations you belong to, bank accounts, voting registration, the works!!  Seriously you won't forget anything.  You do need to put your personal info into the site but if you want to leave out your social security number or anything else (i.e bank account numbers) you can just skip it and still print up your letters and write it in later on the print out for security reasons.  It works in all 50 states.  I used it for OR and had a great experience.

The reason why I did it was because I know the founder.  She was a member of my church back on the east coast and she thought this whole thing up.  I wish I would've thought of it. What a great idea. AND if you are not completely satisfied in 60 days she will refund all of your money.

You will need certified copies of your marriage certificate as PP said.  Include this with all your letters you print and you can be done in a very short time with no stress. :)  And trust me I stress over everything.
