I just bought DH an iPhone for his birthday a couple of weeks ago. As of Saturday, he had only used 20MB of data and his usage is really sporadic and nothing out of the norm.
All of a sudden, we are seeing MAJOR jumps in his usage - so much so that, within the last 5 days (since Saturday), he has gone up to over 250MB used! We absolutely cannot figure out why this is happening since he's not been using his phone any differently.
We connect to wifi in the house, he occasionally checks email outside of the house....nothing unusual.
The only speculation we have at this point is that he downloaded the Podcaster app. He downloads his favorite podcasts at night when he's on wifi and has it set to ONLY download when on wifi. He listens to the podcasts on his way home from work in the car - no wifi here, but I was under the impression that it shouldn't matter since the content is already downloaded to his phone.
I am frustrated because now we've been charged an overage fee of $15 plus, at the rate it's been climbing, he's going to burn through another 200MB by the time the month is up. Obviously we need to put in a call to AT&T Customer Service, but I wanted to check in with you ladies to see if you had any ideas as to why this is happening. My fear is that they won't have a good answer.
DH loves his iPhone, but it he was unsure about getting it in the first place. He's been super excited about it until all of this started happening a couple of days ago.
Re: Issues with Iphone Data Usage - Help!?

DataPlus is suggested for: For Web surfing, sending email, and social networking
DataPro is suggested for: For downloading or streaming music/video or using high bandwidth applications
Their site says that 65% of their users use less than 200MB while 90% of their users use less than 2GB's.
If you go to the link I put on here there is a chart breaking down various activities on a smartphone by usage and it will suggest which data plan you should be on.
Another thing to be aware of is apps running in the background. He should occationally check to see if there is anything that uses data running in the background. Just double click on the home button, then any apps that are running are shown.
To turn off the apps, just touch and hold on one until it starts the shake. Then touch the minus sign on anything he wants to turn off.
