Hello! Questions about Eugene.

Good morning! I am visiting you from the bump boards. I currently live in Charlotte, NC but my husband has a job opportunity in Eugene. I was wondering if anyone could tell me a little about the town? I know it is a college town and it rains a lot but I don't know much more than that. Is it a pretty safe town? How about diversity? My DH and I are an inter-racial couple so I need to be sure we are going to be welcomed and not looked at strangely (sad that I have to even say that but it does happen). If he got the job, we would rent for a while until we became acclimated with the area. What are some good neighborhoods? Any other information would be great as well! Thanks in advance!!!

Re: Hello! Questions about Eugene.

  • Eugene is about 90 minutes to 2 hours from Portland.  It's a pretty straight shot down I-5.  I don't know a lot about it, but it is a...different area.  It has a reputation for lots of hippies  - you know, dreadlocks, hackysocks, and pot.  I also know they have a big faerie festival each year, complete with wings.  I've always felt safe there and it's a nice little place [:-)]
  • I lived there in college and a little while after and really liked it. It's a really nice, laid back kind of town. There are hippies, yes, but not like everyone thinks...everyone doesn't have dreadlocks and smell like weed...just some people ; )

Oregon in general isn't exactly the most racially diverse place you'll ever visit, but I really don't think you'd have any problems in Eugene.

I'm not too familiar with neighborhoods besides those around the campus, so hopefully someone else can share some info.

  • I'm not super familiar with the neighborhoods, but  I believe Ferry Street Bridge and South Hills are considered the nicest. You'll pay high dollar for those areas too. That said there aren't many bad places in Eugene either. I wouldn't want to live in the Whitaker district and certain areas near campus, but that's about it.

If you are needing a job, good luck. It's tough here.

  • I have lived in Eugene for 6 years during which I lived in most zip codes. Eugene Is laid back and has a variety of people from hippies, red necks, republicans and democrats.  There are a lot of trees in Eugene and some nice parks but also really bad pollen. Eugene has a good university for attacting people from all over so, it is one of few places in Oregon with people of different religions and non-white people (Oregon is a very white state).

Eugene is a fairly safe town: I walk all over town but of course I would be careful walking by yourself at night. I am also in a interracial marriage and there are no problems here (Eugene is pretty liberal).

There are a lot of really nice neighborhoods it depends on how much you want to pay for rent. The schools are also good but, the south side is the best.

Springfield is right next to Eugene and the rent is cheaper but It is the ghetto of Eugene.

If you want you can message me and I can tell you more about it.
