Vaccine ultimatum from pedi

Hi there...

Hoping to get some thoughts on what is proving to be a very difficult subject for us...we were given an ultimatum from our son's pedi yesterday to either have him receive the MMR vaccination OR find another health care provider.  They gave me a week to make the decision and made it very clear that they would no longer see him if we decided to delay MMR any longer (he is 20 months).  Needless to say I am pretty upset about this.  To date, we have loved this pedi office and can't beleive we are being forced to make this decision.  He is pretty much up to date on his other vaccinations, I am just scared to death over MMR as I have a friend whose son is autistic.  It seems there are limited options as to other pediatricians in our area.  Not trying to spark the vax debate...just wondering if anyone had had a similar experience.

Thanks for any thoughts,

Kristen

Re: Vaccine ultimatum from pedi

  • Let me guess you go to Dover Peds??  We had the same problem because we are non vaccinating.  They were downright rude.

We live in Rochester and go to Rochester Pediatrics.  They are right off Rt 108 near the airport, so it's not very far from Dover.  I highly recommend them.

Even though they strongly suggest them  they will not kick you out and support your decision.

  • It is your right as a parent to refuse the MMR vaccination.  However, it is also the ped's right to strongly urge you into having your son recieve the vaccine, but they should not be giving you an ultimatum.  I have strong views on vaccinations and believe that EVERY parent should vaccinate their child, but we won't get into that. = )   All I"m going to say is please, please do your research on the MMR vaccination.  Just because your friends son has autism does not mean your child will have it too.  = )  No flames.. just please make an educated decision on this.
  • im so totally there with you on the mmr vaccine...

honestly, i had it done and held my breath everytime.... that said, YOU ARE THE PARENT and i would be damned if anyone were giving me a an ultimatum.  i would find a different pedi.  one that is supportive of your decisions but at the same time educating about the vaccines also... kwim?

gl with that.... i would be beyond bull with that pedi....

  • Just to add to it... the doctor's will give you info on the vaccinations... but do further research from what they tell you.  They give you the info directly from the CDC who is the government.  Look mainly into the actual ADVERSE reactions to vaccinations of different types.  I don't blame you with your decision... you have a right to be nervous.

One website I like that gives a lot of 'the other side' of the coin is 909shot.com... it's not by the government, so it will show you articles on both sides of the debate and info on the diseases the shots are meant to protect.

  • Thanks for your responses and suggestions...It is in fact Dover Peds and   they were pretty rude to me too.  Regardless of what we decide, I am not sure if I will be able to go back there again!
  • Yes they are quite rude aren't they?  You should have heard the barading I got from the Dr at the hospital right after my child was born.  Just downright uncalled for.  My husband was PISSED.  Even the nurses apologized because of him.

  • oh wow...I can;t imagine any physician doing that...esp to a new Mom!  I hope things have improved since you switched to Rochester Peds...we are definitely considering switching now too.
