I know a lot of areas in the states don't do this, but a lot in our area do. I can never remember if it's the 5th or the 6th of December. I think he's suppose to come the night of the 5th so the kids can open gifts on the morning of the 6th.

My sister asked me when it was, since her son is old enough to be in school, and the other kids will be talking about it. Up until this point she's just done it the night she thought it was. I've done some research and have found some conflicting dates. I know our area doesn't do it around the 17th for sure... but I am wondering if any one knows exactly what night he comes.

I also wanted to add, that I know that St. Nick's day is the 6th of December. I just don't know if he's suppose to come the night of the 5th, or the 6th.

the 5th popped into my head right away, so I think he comes on the 5th, and you get your stuff on the 6th.

OMG!!  I read your post, and in my head I said "She must be from Wisconsin...:  because I am a former Wisconsinite (Sussex), and I lived in Arizona the last 16 years, and they NEVER heard of Saint Nick there!   Now I am in Colorado, and guess what?  Don't celebrate it here either.  Must be a Wisco thing!!!   My H still thinks I am making it up.
