I don't understand the BCS

This is the second week in a row Ohio State has won (and teams above us have lost) and we did not move up at all in the BCS rankings.  What gives?

Re: I don't understand the BCS

  • H and I were thinking them the same thing. While we were watching other games on Sat, I noticed were weren't in the top 10. I could have sworn they were #10 after the loss to Wisconsin.

The sports media hates OSU and they probably figured they could stick us there. And Oregon really shouldn't be at the top or wherever they are. They are only good bc they haven't played anyone good.

  • Its computer generated rankings and has nothing to do with any of the other polls. I don't know what formula they use but I agree that the BCS rankings are usually bull. I'm not even going to get into the TCU Boise State argument, but if Auburn and Bama were to play right now and Bama won they would probably jump to #2 with 1 loss.
  • The BCS is stupid. I don't even think strength of schedule is a factor this year...or maybe it's not as big of a factor...it's weird.

I keep hearing sports commentators jump on the TCU/Boise State/Utah bandwagon, but until they can prove they can hang with the big boys...I'm not buying it. I know it'll never happen, but I want a playoff really bad.

  • I'm pretty sure the BCS does take an average of the other polls. Its based of a math equation basically. If you play a decent team and win you're going to move up more than if you play a crappy team and win. Same goes for losing, if you lose to a crappy team you will drop more. But, if you lose to a top 10 team you won't drop as much. How much you win by goes into it too. I'm an Oregon alumni, so I guess I can say I'm a fan of the BCS right now :) I still think a playoff system would work better, but in football it would be hard to coordinate I think.

  • They have playoffs in other levels of NCAA football, so the sport is not the problem. In my opinion, the only reason they do not have a playoff at the top level is they can not figure out how to make as much money as the current bowl system.

I wish they would go to a playoff system.

Agreed. I read somewhere last year that the combination of money and school is keeping the BCS schools from going to a playoff. Or something like that. I think if they could make the playoffs as profitable as bowl games, the BCS would go away. Probably won't happen though.

  • It is most definitely about the money. But, also, teams within football conferences are more closely matched making it more difficult to play across conferences. Unlike basketball, you would never find an OVC football team even capable of scoring against an SEC team, let aline beating them in a playoff setting (that is purely hypothetical in football... But FACT in basketball Smile ). I couldn't even begin to tell you how that would be handled in a playoff setting, but it would be a major factor.

People are focusing more and more I'n the Oregons and Boise States and the TCUs because the majority of us are tired of teams getting by just on name alone. You're not always automatically going to be awesome just because you're USC or Florida or OHio State. There are incredible teams out there that never get the chance to share I'n the spotlight because they don't have the name or the history to back them up. But none of this will be able to be fixed without a complete overhaul and restructuring of college football as we know it, so don't hold your breath for anything to change I'n the near future. (I'm typing this on my iPhone so if there are crazy mistakes - like my auto spellcheck changing 'in' to 'I'n'- I apologize.)
