Ideas for elegant sheet cake?
Or at least one that's not childish? I'm planning a 50th b-day party for my mom, and the last thing I want to do is give her a "R.I.P." or "over the hill" cake. Most of the designs at our local store are just so colorful and crazy. I found a pic of a cake with an edible monogram sheet on top and a ribbon around it that looked pretty, but I can't find anywhere online to order the monogrammed sheet from.
TIA for any help!

Re: Ideas for elegant sheet cake?
Take a picture of the sheet cake you like to your local stores. I'm sure someone can help replicate it.
Unfortunately they don't do edible sheets. Not that it has to have an edible sheet. I'm pouring over photos online, but everything is kids cakes and the normal flowers and ribbons. Maybe I'm putting too much pressure on a birthday cake, lol.

I agree a tiered cake would be better, but I'm not sure if I can fit it in the budget (a tiered cake more than doubled the price for the number of people)- perhaps a small tiered and a sheet cake would do the trick.

Stenciling a cake is very VERY easy. ( I could do it without an ounce of artistic skill) After you frost the cake, dip a large knife in just boiled water and sweep in a single motion across the cake (Knife should be larger than cake if possible). Place stencil on cake and springle your sugar over it. Sprinkle more sugar than you would expect. Lift off stencil gently to not dislodge the excess sugar. Powder sugar looks great on chocolate frosting. Brightly colored sugar looks great on white frosting. It is all about the contrast.
I like both of these and if you don't want the first one to be all black I think you can use color for the diamonds and have it look great.
