I would like to try the Florida Keys, but I don't know anything about it...suggestions and info please?? What kind of things are there to do, where is the best place to stay, etc....
I've only been to Fort Lauderdale....I don't know much about other Florida beaches! Thanks
Re: f/u to vacation post
We honeymooned in Key West. AMAZING! The other keys have pretty nice resorts. Islameralda (sp?) has a really nice place to stay (I think its Chico Lodge I went w/ my fam a coupe years ago) HOWEVER there isn't a ton to do on the other keys. If you are ok with that and sticking around your resort then you are good to go.
If you want some variety then do Key West. So we stayed at Casa Marina which was beautiful. We loved that the pool was great and that they had a beach. Technically I think its man made and a little rocky (not super small sandy sand) but not a big deal as long as you don't plan on building sand castles.
DH loves to be kept busy but I'm content w/ a book under an umbrella SO what we did was we'd go out in the AM to see Truman House, Hemingway House, the Shops and other local areas then in the afternoon we would be back for the beach/pool.
We went out to dinner and only ate at the hotel once. Their food was great we had a table out on the beach so nice. However we tried out all the cool small local places which we loved. We had amazing food the whole trip.
Please let me know if you need any more info!!
Another thumbs up for Key West! The drive from Miami was so scenic - just have to pray for no car accidents on Highway 1 because it's a 2-lane road and would be backed up forever. My girl friend D and I went 4 years ago and flew into Miami. The drive through Islamorada and Key Largo were so scenic, we stopped at both just to stretch out and walk around.
We stayed at the Holiday Inn right as you entered Key West; no beaches close by but they had a great pool!! If you stay at Pier House they have their own private beach area and they have THE best key lime pie!!! We did a glass bottom boat tour while there, and hit Mallory Square at dusk - cool place! After that we hit the bars on the strip. Check out www.keywesttravelguide.com for places to stay, eat and hang out. The mahi mahi sandwich was to die for at this one place we ate - I'll have to see if I can look up the name of the restaurant on my picture CD.
you guys are the best! thanks
i always start dreaming of vacations when the weather gets cold...brrrr
Casa Marina is freaking beautiful (my friends are getting married there, yay!) but it's mucho $$$$. The Reach Resort is run by the same people but a little less expensive. It's nice and has a beach (not all of Key West does).
I stayed at the cutest place there once called the Island City House hotel. (http://www.islandcityhouse.com/). It's a couple of blocks off Duval Street (where all the bars are) so it's kind of quiet, but close enough to walk. I would stay there again in a heartbeat.
As for what to do -- you can always stroll up and down Duval for bars and restaurants. Hemingway's house is really cool like Laurie said. Also you HAVE to go to Mallory Square for sunset -- so pretty and there are street performers and stuff.
Okay now I want to go with you!
