hey i read your post on your new JRT on the pets board.. not sure if you saw my response or not. but I have a 9 year old JRT myself who is just as crazy as when she was a baby!
Re: **HOCKEYWIFE2BE**
I did, thanks!
We had JRT's growing up, so I definitely know how insane they are. Part of the problem is that his exercise is restricted bc of the ACL surgery, so he definitely isn't getting all the activity he needs.
He just literally has NO manners. He's a pretty level tempered JRT, but still has some (very minor) aggression issues. For example, if all the dogs are barking at the door and one of the other dogs bumps him, etc. he nips and snarls at them.
I'm also worried because we plan on having kids in the nearish future and don't really know how to go about baby proofing him. I guess we'll have to take it one step at a time.
oh I didn't realize you had them growing up so you are well aware of the insanity ha!
ours has aggression too, especially food aggression, not real sure how to stop this since its been 9 years and nothing has ever really been done about it. we don't have children (well a 13 year old step son who she doesn't even pay attention to), but when my 1 year old niece comes over its HELL. she is so jealous and she barks just about the entire time she is there and we have to watch them constantly, even if my niece goes near her food area (no food is down) she will get snippy.
May I ask how long your JRT lasted when you were younger ?I hear they have a lifespan of 18 years and the lady up the street has one and she is 17 and deaf and blind, but going strong.
One was 17 when he died and one was 14. The one who passed away at 14 shouldn't have. Basically he was as crazy as he ever was, went in for a routine tooth extraction (so he had to be put under), the vet screwed up, gave him too much fluid which got into his lungs and he died a few months later from congestive heart failure as a result
Thankfully, Jake doesnt seem to be food aggressive. We've actually been really lucky with our JRTs (my parents now have another one too). I've heard horror stories, but we seem to have had very even tempered ones.
Hopefully his small aggression issues will disappear with some much needed training!
I say "Jake, sit" and he stares at me like I'm from another planet. LOL.
Oh no I feel so sad for your 14 year old who left you way too early and shouldn't have.
people probably think I am crazy, but I think they are the cutest dogs. their faces are so cute. did your parents get another puppy?
I definitely have the food aggression thing and not real sure how to stop that business. Daisy has been with us for a year now. but I have known her since she was a puppy, but she lived with my sister for 8 years.
besides the wackiness/craziness of them. I thinkthey are good dogs, mine has never been crated and we have never had accidents, she doesnt' chew things, she isn't destructive and when I chat with other people here and there they say the same thing.
