Pre-Conception Checkup?

A friend of mine recently told her doctor they were going to start trying to get pregnant and he scheduled he for a pre-conception checkup.  I told my doctor the same thing and she just told me to start taking folic acid.  Does everyone go for this pre-conception checkup?  I am thinking about changing Gyno's because of this.  I want a doctor who would be attentive to my needs.  Does anyone have a good Gyno in the south suburb area they would reccomend?

Thanks,
Sarah

Re: Pre-Conception Checkup?

  • If you generally like your GYN, I'm not sure you should change just because of this.

I don't have children, but my sisters do and neither of their GYNs had them come in for a pre-conception appointment. Also, my GYN just told me (at my yearly physical about a week ago) that if I decide I want to try to conceive (if you're new here, people generally type TTC) within the next year, start taking folic acid now. I asked if I would need to come in and see her if that day comes before my next yearly physical, and she said no. I really like her, and trust her.

If you're looking to change for a few reasons I hear ya, but if you are happy except for this one thing, I don't think it necessarily demands a change.

  • I asked my doc about this at my last regular appointment, and all she told me to do was start taking prenatal vitamins, and what I should stop eating and drinking once I get pregnant - basically caffeine, fish, sushi and lunchmeat.  I personally don't think an additional scheduled "pre-conception" checkup is necessary as long as you're in decent health and don't have any medical conditions that could complicate pregnancy.

  • Thanks so much girls!  That makes me feel a lot better.
