Thanksgiving Turkey Alternatives

We're doing Thanksgiving with my folks for the first time in ages.  It's going to be at my parents house, but for all intents and purposes, DH and I are hosting and are in charge of planning and making the dinner.  I'm trying to figure out what we should do for a main course.  Normally I think of turkey or ham as the traditional choices, but my mom and brother hate turkey and my sister and DH hate ham.  Are there any other traditional options I haven't thought of?  Other ideas?  I'd really like to do something festive and out of the ordinary.

There will only be 10 of us (7 adults, 1 teen, 2 kids) so I don't want to do 2 main courses.

  • My parents have completely stepped away from turkey after we all left the house.  So, we have had grilled salmon or steaks.  They usually go to Costco for the amount of meat at the best price.  Also, my dad grills them on the bbq outside.  But even with all those people it is super quick and your oven is free for any other dishes.

    The other dishes would be a mix of traditional sides and you can add new ones.

    Here in England for Christmas they do a turkey, but also cornish game hens, pheasent, partridge or goose. I am sure you could find something like that in the US. So, that might be a nice varient unless the idea of fowl would not go over well.

  • We have done Roast duck and goose in the past. I know that it's not everyone's favorite, but I know it's not completely out of the norm where I live. However, part of that is because right before thanksgiving is Goose hunting season, and I think duck season is a bit before that (Could be wrong, I don't do any hunting and neither does my family) But I know goose for sure.

    Otherwise, I see no reason why you can't do steaks or some kind of fish. Just because the traditional meal always has turkey, or some variant of foul, doesn't mean you have to stick with that.

  • Roast beef or pork loin?
  • My family traditionally used to have turkey on Thanksgiving AND Christmas. My mom hates turkey, so whichever holiday she cooks for (we alternate), she makes surf and turf (lobster tails and filet mignon). 
  • Beef tenderloin or crown roast look very festive in a Dickensian sort of way, esp if you put those little paper frills on the roast.
  • Why not serve all Italian? We did that one year; it was great.

    There's also ham or roast beef -- or perhaps you can turn the dinner into an inernational event if everybody brings a side dish.

     You supply the main dish and a dessert.

  • A standing rib roast makes a nice holiday meal.  We usually do it for Christmas but there's no reason you can't have it for Thanksgiving it you want.
