QOTD

What are your thoughts on bullying? What can be done to stop it? What would you do if you had a kid that was bullied? What would you do if you had a kid that was a bully?

Re: QOTD

  • Oh geez, that's a big question!

As a teacher, I do my best. If I see it, I address it. We just got a new principal and she's awesome at laying down the law. She let the kids know that she has no problem calling the cops, and a lot of our bullying problems have gone away.

Having said that, often times the victims of bullying don't help themselves out at all. I have a new kid this year, fresh off the plane from India, who doesn't wear any deodorant. Seriously, the kid smells awful. I've talked to him about it, and he hasn't gotten the message. No one wants to sit with him/work with him/etc. I know they're making comments behind his back. But, you know, it's not like I can force people to be nice. Wish I could. Can't.

I think the best you can do is teach kids how to empathize and to give them exposure to all sorts of different points of view. The more we understand differences, the more we're likely to accept them.
