Sorry this got so long but I thought I would share with you what works.
We are currently dealing with the mice problem as well. Since our house was empty for 6 months. We have only caught a couple so far but is seems to be getting better.
Go with the old school wooden traps, I know gross to see the mice but they work the best and are the cheapest. We tried the ones that hide them and they don't work...junk! Peanut butter works best or I have even heard of people smashing a gum ball into the trap. The sweeter the better. DH said snapping the trap on your finger is not recommended. lol ouch!
Clean out all cabinets, pantries, etc. We have now gone to all tupperware sealed containers of food. They can smell everything. We put all of the food in Vacuum sealed canisters and put them high up in the cabinets for now until we get a handle on it. Make sure there is NO open food anywhere. They take everything noodles for nests, they can chew through all kinds of packaging. Dog food and treats should also be sealed up in something.
I have also heard pure 100% peppermint oil will keep them away. Put it on a cotton ball on a dish where they are active and just get a new one every few months or when it starts to lose its smell. This is going to have a very strong smell as well so be ready for your house to smell like a giant candy cane (I Have not tried this yet, I am still looking into the dog and how this will effect him.)
This is the nasty idea we have gotten but we heard from a friend that when they moved into their house they caught 15 mice and have never had anymore problems. Take a 5 galloon bucket, if you want to keep them alive and release them just put candy bars, peanut butter or something along those lines in the bottom and make a ramp. Once they get in they can't get out. Simply dump them somewhere. Otherwise I have been told you can put some water in the bottom and they drowned. Seems kind of mean to me but to each their own.
We also have pest control coming out. It is affordable and so worth the peace of mind to seal everything up IMO.
I refuse to use Poison as I don't want them crawling somewhere to die and never find them so that is a last resort.
HTH and Good luck. Trust me you are not alone. This happens to a lot of people especially this time of year.
